Check Engine light on

Maybe. Hard to believe there are peeps out there that would gas up with the engine running.

LOL, why? I do it all the time when it's 100 degrees outside and people are in my car in sport coats and such. I put the parking break on with considerable force. The only reason it is advisable is so that the car doesn't take off due to kids screwing with it or something like that (i.e., tranny failure and subsequent launch). Explosion potential while fueling is no more prevalent than driving down the road.

too funny!! that's a good one. Of course the odds of a stray spark affecting gasoline while fueling is far greater than with deisel, and greater while the vehicle has an active electrical system, which is of course why it is illegal to hot fuel a gasoline vehicle.

But you knew that already and were just joking with us!

No, I'm not. You have a far, far greater chance of causing an explosion just by your own static electricity than you do by leaving your car running. If leaving the car running sounds scary, I would hate to see the rituals that you go through freaking out about static electricity. Let me guess. You don't freak out about that.

From 1982 to 1988 (While working on the farm) I've fueled with the engine running:

1972 Gran Torino (My car at the time 1986-1988)
1974 Chevy Pick-up truck (Work truck)
1981 Chevy Silverado
1985 Pontiac Fiero (Engine is in the backm near the fuel point for chrisake!)
1980 Chevy Conversion Van, with drunk football fans packed inside.

and more, and this was from an above ground tank of gas, next to a
above ground tank of diesel, in the winter time when static electricity
is high.

Vehicles are MADE to be fueled when running.

Now, don't confuse OTHER fueling mishaps with a 'running car' ones
that are static electricity related: (I know you can post links to 1000's
of 'running car' fuel accidents, and you'd be right, but I bet there are
more factors like a leak, broken part, etc that are in play) but a simple
car running is not grounds for a spark.

He forgot to ground / earth the truck BEFORE
opening, and spark from HIM caused the explosion: LINK

Again, not grounded: LINK

BEST ONE: Notice the shirt, it's sticking to her like glue,
static electricity is MORE dangerous than a sealed engine! LINK

Anyhow I think you got the point and well
turn the car off is NOT WRONG, just very
safe, safe is good.

Peace!(rei)
