Hi all, i got my Mazda3 5 spd hatchback for a lil over a month and so far i put 1440 miles on the babe. Everything was fine until today the "engine light" came on. I wanna know what causes it and what should i do?....feedback will be much appreciated.

There are many possible causes. I suggest taking it to Autozone and having the fault code read. Perhaps there may be a TSB out there that will shed some light on the situation. There is also the dealership, but you will pay for them to check it most likely. That should give you a starting point.

The dealer doesn't charge you to check a CEL code, unless you're out of warranty, which you shouldn't be.

mazdas are obd II can bus autozone cant read them....autoxray scanner or dealership is the only options

thank you guys, i just called my mazda dealer and they schedule me on Oct 4th. The service person was telling me the car is perfectly safe to drive with even with the light on. He also mention about there are 3 things i can be control of, 1st: don't continue fueling after you hear that "click", 2nd: make sure the fuel cap is completely tight, 3rd: shut off the car when you fueling.

I know i did all the stuff he said and i just went to the car and tight the fuel cap but still no luck (pissed) . anywayz..thanks guys

I called 3 nearby dealers asking about the "check engine" light.

Santa Monica Mazda's unit wasn't working so they couldn't diagnose the problem. The Service Manager didn't know when they would get a new unit.

I Called Culver City Mazda and left a message for the Service Manager, he never called back (dick head)

Called Galpin and talked to Scott, the Service Manager and he told me this is real common in 3's right now. There are over 30 different things that might go wrong for the engine light to come on.

I was going to schedule an appointment next week, and now my engine light has gone off.

So, I don't know what to do, take my car in, even though the light isn't on or what......

Yes you can still take the car in with the light off, the code will still be stored for them to read. It may just be a sensor of some sorts getting a bad reading that it figured out, but it doesn't hurt to get it check just to make sure.

With a new car it is possible to have the lights come on as a harness could have jiggle loose, it is normally not a sign of any major problem according.

1st year production mazda 6 did that too random cels but the ones I got only lasted for like 5 miles? there was a wds update to correct it. once mazda relases the update then they will come out into the open with the solution. To them it's better to duck and hide till the mean time so they don't have to say we don't have anything for it...deal with it till we do.

The code will still be stored in the PCM.

I had heard that 3's were having issues. I wonder if Cali's stricter emissions have anything to do with it. Anyways, I also heard that for one of the known issues, Mazda hasn't even submitted replacement code for CARB testing/approval. The large number of CEL on 3's is a big black eye for Mazda.

my check engine light just came on too

i was driving to work today and all of a sudden i felt my car jerk back and forth on second gear. i switched to third and it did it again. i dont know what it is and my engine light came on. WTF? i know its pretty common for the check engine light to come on for mazda 3's but i dont know about the jerking back and forth on second and third. does anybody else have this problem too?

as many of you guys mentioned before, my ECL went away after 100 miles the light was lid up. i'll guess i'll still take it back to the dealer for service

yes thats what I get but not jerking...just noticable loss of hp(pissed) I ran my car with cel on and I was pulling high 17's when the car runs high 16's stock. Whatever causes the cels causes the car to loose power.

My check engine light came on, and after I picked it up from the dealership they said it was because my fuel cap was loose. But even if you tighten your cap you still have to take it in so they can turn the light off I believe. It didn't cost me a thing.

yes that was 1 of the many cel issues...one guy was at the dealership for faulty crash sensor when I went in.

The will often go into "safe" mode when a CEL is present, that would be the lost of power you are noticing. Other cars do it the 6 probably does to.

The check engine light also came on on my Mazda3 when I had only been driving it for a month. I took it to my dealer who said that he had been seeing that problem in a lot of Mazda3's, and it was because Mazda had set the original parameters for the gas expansion tank too close (or something like that). The problem occured againa few weeks later, but this time the dealer had received an update from Mazda that he said would fix the problem - he ran some computer program that changed the settings and I have not had the problem since. I suggest you talk to the dealer again and see if they have any updates from Mazda.
