Cel P0171

fuel cut isn't its problem that's when the ECU shuts things down...in this case the tune on the AFC isn't tuned well for colder air in the upper RPM band

Update: i reset the CEL and all was good. Just got in from getting some subways. and i got another CEL on the way home. This time im doing 80km/h not boosting at all.
sure enough its the same System Too Lean. I reset it... think i should take it in?

getting same code... cleaned my MAF (with proper cleaner), reset codes, and they did come back. going to try and clean primary 02 sensor next. good luck to me

its right on the exhaust mani, sticking out of the front of it...looks sort of like a spark plug sticking though the heat shield

hey, I have this code and the dealer is telling me i need a new MAF sensor. i already replaced the o2 sensor and checked all the hoses for a leak

the dealer said it was gonna be $575 for parts and labor for a new MAF. does anybody know where i can buy one cheaper?

in the mean time ill tell them to clean it and see if that gets rid of the code...thanks.

EDIT: dealer just threw out the possibility of cleaning the Maf sensor and said it needs to be replaced. found this 2003 mazda protege maf sensor what do you guys think?

I worked on his car back when he had it, I believe his problem was the exhaust mani that was cracked (and man it was like an earthquake hit it)

a dealer will always try to get you to buy parts as thats where the money is but cleaning the maf is a possible alternative but it depends on whats wrong with it. If you had a cleanable oil based air filter that got oil on the maf you can clean it but there are other cases where you can't

you can get a maf in the f/s section theres always 1 or 2 flying around somewhere, other than that go to a scrapyard and do it your self, it only takes about 20 min to swap a MAF

just searching around, because mines throwing the code now too, I just fixed the leak from my exhaust mani. but code came back.. gonna do all the stuff and whatnot, but anyways I just wanted to say.. I hope you didn't get that MAF from the dealer, that's a complete ripoff, just buy one on here or something like that, and it takes 20min tops if not closer to 10min to switch them, that amount of money for such an easy problem is a joke.. there usually $100 or so used somewhere just fyi

And for me, I just really hope my exhaust mani isn't cracked, the fluttering/"farting" sound from the previous exhaust mani leak hasn't come back, and I hope it doesn't, would be nice just to be the MAF or something.. but ya that's it, just wanted to let you know to stay away from the dealer's replacement cost for a MAF

I'm not going to start a new thread, since there are already a million "P0171" threads.

A day or two ago I started noticing a VERY intermittent hiccup while cruising at mid-rpm, low load. Barely noticeable, just felt like a little gust of headwind or something. I noticed it about every 15 minutes or so today, and was going to check for pending codes when I got home, when sure enough the CEL comes on.

Other than the aforementioned hiccups, I have no symptoms--idle is smooth and even, vac at idle is 21-23inHg (no large or obvious vac leaks I can locate), no problems under load or in boost. I've only got a stupid narrowband sensor right now, so I can't say anything for certain about AFRs, but it's little "dance" hasn't changed at all. I've cleaned the EGR valve twice in the last 50k miles (at about 108k right now)

I had just cleaned the MAFS a few thousand miles ago, so I don't think that's it, but I cleaned it again today for good measure. Sounds like the next place to look is the primary O2 sensor?

just noticed this, but go to this thread, it's newer, this one is old and dead, even though I posted on it, but I found the other one, more active
but just a quick guess... ya check the primary O2 sensor, although that should throw a diff. code, but ya check and clean that.. i notice that if you shake it when holding down the lock ring thing, and if it rattles its deff. shot, but after that check your wga, even though you said its not under happening under boost but never know the wga being bad or starting to go can do some crazy things with the car, just blow into the vac line going to the wga and see if you can move any air through there, easy test.. and good thing to rule out, but ya go to this thread
