CEL code

My daughter is stationed at Hickam AFB and just picked up her car which the Air Force shipped for her. After driving it for about 100 miles she got a CEL. Unfortunately it is out of warranty. 55,000 miles. Is there a "car place" over there that will do a diagnostics for free like here in Ohio. (Auto Zone) Also, is there a way to do a key on-off sequence that will give her a code. She took it to a dealer and they want $120 to do a diagnostics check. If it's emissions it is still under warranty but if it's anything else she has to pay for the repair. One more thing, is there a place around Honolulu that will do the work reliably and not charge dealer prices or should she just bite the bullet and take it back to the dealer. (Sorry for the novel length of this post)
Thanks,
Caldi

There are a lot of Napa auto parts stores that I see listed in the Honolulu yellow pages. She could try there. We don't have many of them around my area so I'm not sure if they do free diagnostics.

To be honest, you may be better off buying a code scanner for $200-ish and having the ability to scan codes yourself instead of paying a dealer.

You would be looking for a scanner that fits the OBD-II port if it's a 6 or MS6. Not sure about the other Mazda models.
