Catalytic Converter problem??

I have this rattling noise in my car. It's started off low and gradually got louder the last few weeks/months. It only rattles over bumps and stuff.

I took it to the mechanic and he said it's from the Catalytic converter. He showed me one he had lying around and showed me the screen inside. He said that's probably broken and making the noise.

Does this sound accurate? does it sound like a possiblity to the noise?? any suggestions?

thanks

It could be I had a rattle took it in and the mechanic said i needed a cat. I just let it go then my GF put the car in the ditch and when it was in getting the estimate for repairs the mechanic said the heat shield was broke free and would need to be replaced got the car back no rattle. I would check the heat shield first.

I had a rattle and in the end that is what was replaced. Though a lot of things could make a rattle.

But the reason I am posting is to remind you that in Canada, there is an Emissions Warranty that last either 96 months or 128,000kms (~80,000 miles).
My cat was replaced under this warranty. If you are in the States I would imagine Mazda must have similar coverage there too.

People often don't realise that even though the initial factory warranty has ended that this exists. Before you spend the cash, be sure to check if you are covered.
