Cargo Net options for first time Dad

Hi everyone,

My wife and I recently purchased a 2012 Mazda 5 as we are expecting twins and our Mazda 3 wasn't an option any longer. So far we love this vehicle, however we have discovered a potential issue and I'm looking for some assistance.

Strollers etc. for twins are quite large (not to mention 2x everything else) and won't fit with the third row seating up. It was our intention to have the 3rd rown seats permanently down to allow for adequate storage. The twins will be in rear facing car seats in the second row. The issue is that there doesn't seem to be an option for a cargo net while the 3rd row seats are down. As a result, there is a significant gap between the 2nd row seats and in an accident there is a big risk of the trunk items becoming projectiles.

I'm hoping to find a solution to this problem. Does anyone know of any after market cargo net options? The best I've found so far is designed for pets and won't fit in the Mazda 5. http://www.hatchbag.com/suvcargoliner_pet_barrier.php

Two congrats on the twins and the Mazda5! Our first two kids were twin boys so been there done that so to speak. We used to own a 2002 VW Eurovan MV and we carried it in the trunk. Sometimes, on the Thule Evolution cargo carrier, the van came with Vetex roof rack. Yes, stroller for twins are fairly large and what about those baby carrier? I guess you will be getting the combo stroller? I would recommend a Thule or factory roof rack and cargo box being that if you need the third row, I can only see that as an option unless you can sacrifice the one of the third row seat to fold down but if a baby carrier is there, I guess you'd want to have someone seat next to them every so often.

I use the factory cargo net while the 3rd row is down, but you can only fit smaller items under it. You can use bungees attached to the cargo net anchors for larger items. I'm fairly certain that those anchors have not been accident tested. I would also keep the headrests up in the second row. This hurts visibility but might offer slightly more protection from projectiles in the third row. I think bungee cords will be safer than a dividing net, ymmv.

Thanks for the advice. I was also looking into the option of the cargo cover but I'm not sure it would be strong/secure enough to make a difference. Also, it's $200+. Do you have experience with this item?

I may try the factory cargo net + bungee cords and see how that works, otherwise I may need to spring for a Thule.

The cargo nets and cargo cover may hold items back during some spirited driving or evasive maneuvers but will not hold anything back in the event of a severe collision. The netting you linked to is held in place by hook and loop fasteners, Velcro to most of us, and is only designed to keep a pet from entering the passenger cabin under it's own power. What you need, if you want to get serious about it, is something like this:

Problem is, the last I have personally seen like this were on my mom's old E320 wagon, and the decade old Subaru or Volvo wagon you see from time to time.
