Carbon fiber hoods flutter @ high speed?..Please say it aint so!

A buddy of mine just informed me of this .... is it true? I understand most of these aftermarket hoods are appx. 50 % lighter than OEM hoods. But this news doesn't sit well with me. Anybody have any experience with this they'd like to share?

I haven't really watched it at high speeds, but I would expect it to a little bit. Though the hood has a little more flex in it while it's mounted, it's still a solid construction. If you are worried about it that much, get hood pins.

My vis evo hood did. But the vents more than likely caused the turbulence. I'd say about 70mph and up it did. If your worried, just throw on some tasteful hoodpins.

My hood is stock and she shakes like a b**** over 120, even if the cf hood does shake its not goin anywhere, however it is quite annoying just to see while driving, like a butterfly being ***** in your peripheral vision

The part of my hood closest to my windshield "float's" up and down a bit up to 100mph then it stays put with more speed.

I would say that my CF hood is more than 50% lighter than the OEM one.

You can't hear the hood vibrate when you're going that fast anyways. The car is noisier itself. Yes mine flutters too, but we're talking about 140kph and up

mine was fluttering pretty bad until i did the sparco hoodpins

now i just get a small flutter in the center of the hood that sits right under the windshield washer blades. Im thinking a small piece of sheet metal might fix that.....

Thanks man...now I need a good excuse to convince my wife why I need a cf hood(shady)

It looks good also, nice fit.

stay away from ViS hoods.....thats what i got and its bad....the drivers side used to stick up little bit over the head light until i put the pins in. Ive heard that other hoods have better fitment then ViS

I had a Ractive hood that the front of the driver's side stuck up higher.

After having a number of Ractive products I try to stay away from their stuff.

My CF dual vented barely moves even at 200+ kmph. You can adjust your latch so that it pulls down on the hood more.

Did you install those yourself? If so, how did you go about drilling through the carbon fiber? I'd like to at least add my windshield sprayers but I don't wanna damage the hood.

My Fiber Images EVO hood doesn't. If it's an oem-quality hood with oem fitment and you install the oem front seal and such (take it from your other hood), it shouldn't flutter.

Granted, I don't know how it holds up at like 200MPH but then again I'd need a new tranny and even then the car can't physically do it (but my tires are rated for 186+mph so they probably can :D )

yup i did them myself (with some help from Tiger Brand via PMs) I had to cut holes on the underside of the hood so i could mark the top of the hood with grease for drilling. Then i applied....wait, you know what, ill just cut and paste what Tiger said to me in PM

the bolts go in the holes behind each headlight on the rad support. depending on which hood pins you got, you may have to widen the holes. Then I put chalk on the tip of the bolts and lowered the hood on to them. With the hood marked, cover the top of the hood with painters tape around the area where the pins will be. Then use a small hole saw to drill through the fiberglass skeleton on the underside of the hood. Make sure you don't penetrate to the top side yet. once you've cut the hole in the skeleton, remark the tip of the bolts (if needed) and apply painters tape on the bottom of the cf portion. Then, lower the hood on to them again, through the holes you cut, to mark where to drill through the taped area . Drill your holes through the cf (*masked w/ tape on both sides*) and install the sliding pins (or whatever you wanna call em) on your hood. Then you're done and can stand back and admire your work!

did all of that and it worked perfectly. Just be careful when you are screwing the hood pin housing down as i did it too tight and ended up cracking the hood just a little (its not too bad)

*EDIT*

BTW tiger, have you tried to enter your car as ROTM? The more and more i look at your sig the more i wish i had bought a red p5 (cabpatch)

I have an OE style hood from Xcelerated Concepts. It doesn't move/flap/flutter at any speed and the fitment is great.

Nice looking P5 man....so did your hood come pre-drilled for the windshield sprayers or did you do those also yourself?

^ they came predrilled because he bought the one I had been using on my own ride. They are extremely easy to do yourself and should take no longer then 10 mins to do.
