Carbon Fiber Hood

there are only few cars they make carbon hatch for, integras, civics, rx-7s, supras, and few others i might be missing. not for mz3 yet...

PS: The report will come tonight, need to take some more close up pictures!

It's been way over 1 year now, and this is the full report that some of you have been waiting for. Will a cheaper brand(not much cheaper) company's quality last over the years??

I decided to save a little money and buy my carbon fiber hood from a cheaper, not by much, neverthless cheaper merchant. From the day I got the hood, the quality of the hood was never poor. Even now, well over a year after, the hood still has no serious problems.

The most FAQ about the cheaper hood is the discoloration of the cf hood. Well, I will personally admit to a little discoloration under certain cirucumstances. Under direct sunlight from about 5-10ft away, the hood has a lite greenish tint on the weave of the carbon fiber(it appears). Once approaching up close to the hood, the greenish glare disappears and the weaves are good as the day I got the hood. Same goes for 10ft and up, the color is black, no green hue on the hood.

Picture Break!

The second issue I bring to the table is not the actual carbon fiber, but the hood latchet that is fiberglassed in. This is my fault as I should have installed hood pins, as I knew this kind of things are common. The fiberglass surrounding the hood latchet is getting worn from the stress. Not yet a problem, if I don't do anything now, over period of time it will rip off, and my hood is going straight to my windshield! I will update on this, as I ordered some sparco hood pins yesterday.

again picture time!

fiber images has a prototype CF Trunk that looks sick! all i saw were some pics the other week from the distributor but it was nice.....btw...CarbonMz3 ur hood looks nice

I guess the last thing I want to talk about is the clear coat. Personally, I believe the amount of clear coat used, and the quality of the clear coat could have been better. The hood still has a good shine on it(see pic below). But a good layer of wax weekly helps alot on the hood.

In conclusion, from my experience with this hood, and the hoods that were on my previous cars, I think I might have just saved a little money. The overall quality is about equal, and the problems are common with even highly recommended name brands.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that all cheaper cf hoods are the same as the expensive ones! Don't go and buy a $50 hood off of ebay and try to compare it to seibon, there will be a clear difference between the two. However, seibon and vis are both comparable compaines, and one might be cheaper than the other, but the qualities are similar, and so are the problems you might face.

Well thats it, let me know if yall have any specific questions!

awesome report....and I'm one of those people that have held off on buying a hood specifically b/c I didnt know which way to go.....seriously appreciate it...and again AWESOME report!
