This is an very old article. The first time I read it, i though it was a bit harsh on all the cars, and some of the numbers for accel time s are bit strange as well. Other comments in the article just seemed too odd as well

"The Kenwood Excelon Z919 audio system, with its cascading LCD graphics, Mouseketeer controls, and huge trunk-mounted electronic support package, was dismissed as "absurd" by one tester."

This to me is a pure sign that the people testing these cars are just too old for modern cars. Anyone that calls the z919 absurd needs to get a life. It's probably the best stock stereo system ever put in a car. Just because the moron is too stupid to figure out how to use it, does not make it a bad stereo. Just because his fingers are too fat to use the buttons doesn't mean anyting to me either. I'm sick of old people calling something crap because they don't have the patience to figure it out.

For the record, I have the z828 in mine.

Heck, they can't even use the correct picture of the mp3. The blue one they show is the prototype. Wrong rims, yellow calipers ( btw: I painted mine last weekend with the G2 kit finally!).

They even mention that the Nissan is a preproduction car. Hardly fair to put a car that's NOT finished yet up against anything. And Car and Driver is famous for doing this crap. Why even compare it to anything. Why not just wait for a final production car?

They did this crap a few years ago with a 97 prelude. It was preproduction as well. They s*** on it left and right, and at the end say oh, btw, it's "preproduction" anyway. So the whole article was a waste of time. A year later, the did the same car, and praised it up like crazy, and all the accel. times were better too. Killer is, the average joe, reads the bad article, and not the good one, and thinks the car is crap because he believes every word of it.

I gave up on Car and driver a long time ago. Good drivers. Bad writers. i don't care if they picked it as #1. I don't think it was a fair article for any car.

And, They need new younger drivers....so does motor trend. Don't get me started on motor trend. Any company that picks the thunderbird as car of the year......well, they did it because of "fond memories" of their old 57 t-birds. Proof that there getting up there in age.

Hey, it's just my opinion. Everyone has their own right.

Car and Driver is great if you really want to see the lowest 0-60 times your car can do. They seem to usually have the lowest numbers. But, as your reading anything, just use you own judgement. ie. They didn't seem to like the mp3 silver accents.....everyone that has ever sat in my car loves them.

It's all just opinions.

Don't get me wrong - the stereo is pretty good. But "the best stock stereo ever put in a car?" I will have to respectfully disagree.

Have you heard the Mark Levinson stereo in the Lexus LS430? Unfriggen-believable sound. Plus it has 240 watts of RMS power.

Or the Bose stereos in the Mercedes Benz S500 or Infiniti Q45?

Heck, even my Harmon Kardon stereo in my 3 series is better than what I heard during my test drive of an MP3.

Newf, I read a lot of magazines and even subscribe to C&D, Road & Track, Sport Compact and GRM. I have read Car & Driver for decades (I suppose that means that I am too old to drive the MP3, but *I bought one*.) The fact that Road & Track used a 2001 MP3 against a bunch of 2002 cars for the best handling article shows that the car has made a BIG impression on the big car mags. Car & Driver has featured the MP3 a number of times. The fact that the editors don't like the stereo controls or think the silver inserts on the seats is their opinion.

Younger writers? I have trouble dealing with "Import Tuner", SC and a number of tuner magazines because they have no real depth to them. They are mostly catalogs for accessory dealers and feature a lot of show cars as if they were vaild daily drivers. "810HP from a Civic and he drives it to work!" The writing is done in the new "we are just too wild and crazy" style that gets tired after a while. Neat pictures though. Ever notice most of the pictures are done with the car posing in an industrial setting or next to a tagged-up wall?

Every magazine has a following and every tester/writer has opinions are opinions. So do the readers. That's why not everyone drives a GM....or a KIA...or a BMW.

Funny thing is that all of the cars you just mentioned shouldn't come with a lesser strereo since they all are luxury cars. You have to admit that everything the MP3 offers "in it's price range" is pretty damn awesome. Quite possibly the best car in it's price range. Just my .02 cents

I absolutely agree.

yeah I probably should have stated, that it's the best stereo in it's price range. Your right there.

As for being too old for an mp3....that's foolish. Your only as old as you feel/act. I just find that some mags these days have guys that are your typical muscle car lovers, and refuse to enjoy the latest technology. they grew up with v-8's and dont' really give tha latest breed of cars a chance......They start complaining about button sizes, and flashy spoilers like itls the end of the world. Then there the infamous statement "There's no replacement for displacement" Ever hear that? Drives me nuts. Granted there is some truth to it, but there are many cars with a lot of technology behind them instead of just cubic inches, that have proven themselves as well. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a nice V-8 under the hood, but then again, with the prices of gas upwards of 90 cents per liter.....maybe not.

take care guys. btw: I had a bad day at the bank yesterday....you might want to ignore some of my comments yesterday as I was slightly pissed at the bank :)
