capture an ip address?

I dont know what you going to do with his IP but...anyway, here it is what I do.

Run the webservice in your pc, or another pc to be accesed, put a main page to open normally and some pictures, very small, like a dot or a small background, anything less than 2K.

1st try:

Send him an email, html form, do not attach a picture or anything, just link it from your site...inside the code like any webpage "htmlcode img src=http://ip.add.ress.here/pictures/pic.jpg htmlcode"

this way it will be downloaded automatically. then check your log files of the webservice and you are done.

2nd try:

Try the same in a forum, with a Private Message...

I did it, it works, once I had my signature pointing to my "server" locally in my house, had the IP of everyone viewing in my threads!!!
So...if I wanted to do something with anyone, I simply send him a PM with an image/avatar/smilie hosted in my server.

Micah: i didnt mean that an IT Tech can't use AOL, i said i don't believe in the person himself ... i've seen AOL, aamof, AOL was my first ISP back when i used those free disks, but i've just encountered too many limitations.

The email over the phone thing is scary. i would never willingly let someone at an ISP read my emails, even though i know its very easy for them. As for getting emails anywhere, i use my exchange server's web access or i dial to my RAS server if broadband is not availlable. but that's just me. i know not everybody can do this.

I know AOL is very easy to use and offers tons of features, i have no doubts ... but its still AOL =) Its like driving a Firefly or a Lada ... same thing to me. But remember, opinions are like assholes .. everybody has one and some are bad, especially when its not yours. =)

Back on subject now ... what if you get his ip ? If you can't get his ip, i doubt you'll be able to do something yourself unless you find someone who will do it for you. And if you are going to find someone like that, why not ask him to get his ip for you ?

by the way, don't take the comments about AOL personnal. It's between me and AOL =) loooong story hehe

With the IP you need the time when the aggravation took place. You call the police, give the information, and if its serious stuff they should call the ISP for the account information that connected @ that time with that IP, and thats it. The ISP can then contact their telephone provider to have his phone numer (most ISP can track the phone number already) and eventually, the physical location.
Its that simple...

How can you prove the attack was made from that machine??
-You need the mac address.

I hope this clears a bit up.

Yeah I don't care for AOL either we just use a VPN connection to remote mail via the web with Exchange. It runs good through dial up or broadband.

Ive never heard of techs liking AOL either. Most are very antiAOL. but i dont care either way.. Id never get it just because my friends would make fun of me.

Either way, AOL is dial up using PPP so of course they are gonna have a new IP everytime they dial in

For the record, I also use Exchange, and Cisco VPN. The phone email feature of aol is read by a semi-natural sounding voicebot system. If it doesn't recognize a word, it will spell it out.

I don't worry about email being secure. It bounces through way too many servers to be considered secure. For secure efforts, I'll use 128-bit PGP keys. Cisco VPN runs over a secure triple DES connection. While statistics say those methods are secure - I'm even careful to watch what goes on there as well. Nothing is truly secure.

Locks are built to be broken.

All the same, I'm not much of a conspirist or security nut. I've always believed that security through obscurity is often the best measure. Normality is the greatest cover, big brother may be watching ( read 1984 if you don't catch the reference ) but if you never give a reason for suspicion.....

I digress.

im not talking about secure email, i just wouldnt like to have someone i dont know read the dirty stuff my gf sends me =)

128bit PGP and Triple DES is overkill for home ... and triple DES will slow you down =) i'm not THAT paranoid hehehe

WhereISIP - IP Whois Tool

cut and pasted from their website:

"WhereIsIP Key Features
