Cannot decide between Ihi VF 24 or TD04 for a 1.6zm?

Have been reading all the info i can get on this forum and elsewhere to boost a 1.6 zm that drove some 88000 KM . I have shortlisted two turbos that i can get my hands on, IHI VF 24 RHF5 and a TD04.

Any ideas on which one would be better suited for the project. I am looking for low end spool with a decent mid range and top end.

Parts for this project i have in mind

Apexi air intake
VF24 or TD04
FMIC
Custom made manifold and down pipe
Walbro 255
Emanage blue
WRX 440cc injectors any others that will fit with no modifications
ACT clutch kit with street modified disc
NGK ZFR6F-11
NGK 6mm ignition wires (1.6 DOHC)
Cometic B6 headgasket
ARP studs

Boosting at 8 psi to start and gradually raising to 10 psi, with stock internals
Aim is for 200 bhp or so, car is to be used as a daily drive.

are you sure the head gasket from the B6 head gasket will fit on the ZM. crank is the same but heads are not.

VF24 would be my first choice but there is no rebuild kit for it so when it goes it's done, and the fuckers aren't cheap. TD04 are pretty easy to come buy, especially on ebay. for 8psi I'd be happy with the TD04 if it were me.

Been told the B6 gasket will fit, i will probably end up using this b6dc-10-271 which is the B6 stock gasket as I heard its 1.0 mm compared to the stock 0.4 mm

I was initially going for the Td04 but found a Vf 24 for slightly more than the more common Td04. Considering the VF 24 is ball bearing, i thought it might better, not sure on what car the VF 24 came off, might be the one from the STI but the flanges do not look the same.

Found a rebuilt kit for the VF 24 on ebay

I do not want to rebuild it though as where i live i do not believe I can get someone to balance the shaft after the rebuild.

Any one know if the tensioner and idler from a zl engine will fit the 1.6 zm engine as the one for the 1.6zm is three times more expensive!

if you get a B6 head gasket please post, I tried a B6 cometic and it didn't fit my zm.

Vf24 and TD04 share the same flange, I've bolted both up to the same manifold and dp.

Get TD04L & TF305 & mix together become hybrid. Much more better. Thats when my turbo blow up. Or get T28rs from S15 Slivia.

Hey mate how is it going?

Thanks for your input unfortunately, i cannot get most of the parts you mentioned and no shop here can rebuilt turbo and do not really want to open the turbo unless i really have to. Have checked the VF 24 and seems fine the shaft moves freely and compressor blades and housing shows no sign of damage, i will probably go with the VF 24 as it is ball bearing as opposed to the TD04. Not sure though that the VF 24 i got is the same one that is used in the HI boost kit? Anybody knows if they made different variations of the VF24, the one i got is the VF24 RHF5?

PS i will be contacting you with the maps for the EMB. Read somewhere here how you can post the maps. Any body knows how to post maps from emanage?

that rebuild kit will not work on a VF24

Thanks why is that as the VF24 I have is labelled RHF5 seems the same ref as the one on ebay?

I have been told that the 1.6 B6 Cometic headgasket is different but it is usable. What you need to do is to plug the front oil drains in the front of the head and block to be able to use it.

Did you try that out? What about the b6dc-10-271 miata gasket, did you try?

Hey Kaido

What head gasket did you used?

i just use our 1.6L ZM head gasket. 2 layers. hehehe...

your goal of 200whp isn't going to be reaching at 8psi, with a vf24/TD04/T25. more like 150whp. assuming your engine has good compression and leak-down I'd leave the engine as is. not even sure if arp makes studs for the head.

but if you want to go with forged internals you can swap out the zm rods with B6 forged rods. then take B6 forged pistons and modify them to fit or get arias ZM forged pistons, speedcircuit.net

Nope. ARP don't make for our little 1.6L ZM-De engine. Gotta custome make. If you are going for 1.5 bar of boosting. You really need that.

Find Kooldino. He sells them for our forged pistons.

you can take 2.0l ARP stud or 1.6l miata ARP stud.....and for the head gasket the 1.6l miata head gasket b6dc-10-271 will fit !!!

B6 miata head studs are not the same size as ZM protege studs.
2.0 protege studs are not the same as 1.6 protege studs.

B6 miata pistons are not the same as ZM protege pistons. the people who made B6 pistons fit in a ZM block had 1mm machined off the top.

don't post information as fact when it's not.

how can you explain that i have put piston, rod and the head gasket from a 1.6l miata ??? whit the 2.0l arp stud ??? on my 1.6T
