I'm looking to pick up a cheap motor to build so that the MSP isn't down for weeks/months. I'm looking for something cheap and eBay has some stuff listed from Canada for pretty cheap. Is there any reason to stay away from a Canadian Protege motor?

Aside from the fact it's going to cost you an arm and a leg to get it shipped to you (dealing with customs, freight, insurance) why would you not try and pick up a local one? The FS-DE was used in a lot of cars and they're practically no different from the motor that's in the MSP. Just small changes would need to be made and if you're building it then it won't be difficult making those changes.

Here's a thread that may be helpful: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123739954-Engine-Replacement-Interchangeability-FAQ-Guide

All of the local junkyards are almost wiped out. There are maybe 4 in the whole town. Plus they all want AT LEAST $1200 for it.

1200 I would order one from speed circuit. Just google fsde motor cause like said before it came in many cars. Doesn't have to come from a MSP.
