Canada gets screwed again!

MSRP for the top sedan with NAV in Finland is 27,950euro = 42,499.23cad, and only has the 2.0l and manual tranny.

Ok, so I purposely chose Finland because it's known to be just about the most expensive, but even in reasonably priced places like Austria, MSRP is 25,590euro = 38,910.74cad, and the sedan would be 500euro more (in Europe the sedan is more than the hatch). I stand by my prices of roughly $40,000cdn for NAV models in Europe.

I know that's what it converts to but that's not what Mazda could/would sell it for. The U.S. gets the Nav system and by your logic they should be paying the equivalent of $25,590 Euros which works out to $29,769 U.S.!
What something (anything, not just cars) sells for in Europe is not indicative of what it will sell for in North America. It doesn't cost Mazda any more to build the European 3, it's just that they can price it at what the market will bear and means that they make more profit on the cars sold in Europe than the ones sold in North America. My point is that you CAN'T say because it sells for the equivalent of X number of dollars in Europe that's what it will have to sell for here, so they just can't/won't sell it here.

i dont know why but id personally choose p5 over mazda..firstly when u lower a p5, it really becomes aerodynamic, but from what i saw on a mazda3, the roof looks like a hump so i think it wouldnt be as dynamic as a p5

NOWHERE did I say (or imply) the statement above.

Remember the title of this thread, it says 'Canada gets screwed again' and complains about how Canada doesn't get NAV, HID, etc... In response, I gave an European price example to show how the European price point can support these goodies while Canada can't.

The reason I gave the Euro price example was to prove exactly your point - that Mazda Canada can't (at the moment), sell HID, NAV, etc... enabled Mazda3's because the Canadian market won't accept the increased price point that comes with these things. We're in agreement.

We are in agreement, Canadians will not pay $3000 for a Nav system, I do think thay would pay for HID lights, but as we discussed in the other thread there are probably technical reasons for them not offering them. I misunderstood your price point comparison but I now take it as the fact North America sees 4 cylinder cars as econmy cars and that Europeans will pay more for a premium small car. I guess we were debating on the same side, Wongpres. :)

Ya most Canadians wouldn't pay $3000 for a NAV system, but many Canadians do expect to see safety features like side airbags standard or at least an option on any car they chose to buy.

And now after looking at the US specs, which are now on the Mazdausa site, I see that they not only get side airbags but get front and rear curtains too. Also, A/C is standard on the top of line models in the US when in Canada it's an option on the GT model of the Hatch, this totally sucks

Actually, AC is now standard on the top model. Initially, the website was wrong, but they've changed that. I agree with you, just going south of the border, you literally get a different car all together. Air bags, Xenon lights, clear tailights. THis is very disappointing for Canada.

second the opinion.

I would have hoped for at least side airbags as an available option, because for my parents (whom I have to justify the purchase to) its kind of a showstopper. This, in light of the fact that it is freely available in the United States, so we're not even talking about any technical/engineering reason for the omissions of airbags.. purely economical, and for god knows why. Safety features should be on the top of the list to filter down to the base models, in my opinion.. HID's would be nice to have but again something I could live without (In that regard, I guess Mazda Canada guessed right for their demographics)

Just got my Mazda 3 a couple weeks ago (love it) I wouldn't have paid the $3g for the NAV system myself (I have a laptop +GPS that I use anyway :P) Could probably aftermarket a better system for less anyway if you really wanted to, as for side impact bags I probably would have got those had it been an option but i've been driving around for 6 years without any airbags so the 2 frontals are a large improvement for me anyway :P I'm a big fan of those rain sensing wipers and auto lights, which the US didn't get hehe :)

hey guyfromhe, so that's your 3 I've seen around Winnipeg. That's the one I'm gonna get. Where did u get yours and what did u pay? What options did u get? And yeah, very nice car.

Possibly, I havn't seen alot of 3's locally myself and i've only ever seen one other orange 3 around....I got mine at Destination Mazda on Portage, I got the GT with the GFX package in auto (i'm too lazy to learn to drive a manual) added the spoiler, and mp3 player (which is still on backorder), I also got them to tint the windows and put in command start (they gave them to me at cost). The total came out to $30g with eveything except command start, tint and extra freight (had to pay to freight it fom sask).
I've got better pics of it up at http://guyfromhe.com/pics.html all the way at the bottom...I really love that car :) If you go to destination mazda talk to Jason (if you havn't already bought it) :) i had a very pleasant experience there i'd highly recomend them if you're looking for dealers. I had some problems with some scummy manager at gauthuier mazda. It's not worth the trip to steinbach, I tried that too :P

Price sounds about right. Destination Mazda? I'm going to Gauthier myself, I know somw people there. Do you cruise? If you do, should pm or email me. I'm affiliated with a local car crew. The only other orange I've seen doesn't have the spoiler though.
