Can anyone explain this one? Re: MP3 changer

Why is a 6 disc in dash CD changer with MP3 support available on the Sport as an option but not on the Touring or GT? Further, why make 2 different 6 disc changers in the first place...

I can't be the only one that thinks this is totally insane.

Odd, in Canada I had the choice between 1 CD with no MP3 or 6 CD with MP3. Given the upcharge for the 6CD I opted for a 4GB iPod Nano and a FM transmitter. I can still buy the AuxMod unit and still be ahead by a couple of hundred dollars. The FM transmitter sucks!

I forgot you guys get different options up there. The reason this is assenine, is because my Touring comes standard with a 6 disc in dash changer with NO mp3 support.

I intend on ordering an AuxMod myself, but gotta wait till payday. :)

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought you could get the CD changer/MP3 player with any model you want as a dealer-installed accessory. Either way, you have to take whatever existing setup you have out. Kinda stinks if you already have the CD changer and paid for it.

As for us, we have no CD changer. We went the retro route and had a cassette player put in. Dealer looked at us funny, like we came straight out of the 1980s. Okay, so neither of us have bought a cassette since about 1989 or so, but it's nice to have, and it makes a great adapter for the iPod, precisely because the FM transmitter (which worked fine in our MPV)--to quote Mazda5wannabe--sucked.

I'm just clearly going by the brochure and website when specing out a new mazda5. 6 disc MP3 is an option on the sports model but not on the touring and gt because it already has a 6 disc that does not play mp3's. My point is why manufacture two different units?

I totally agree about FM modulators sucking though. When we had our forester I used to have to disconnect the antenna to get a decent signal.

The MP3 support is support for CDs burned with MP3 data, not perosnl mp3 players. Most burned CDs are fine, with or without mp3 support. However, back in the day, CD burning programs didn't burn the mp3 as audio files, they burned them as pure data and some CD players did not recognize them as music and made a strange shrieking electronic whine when attempting to play such a disk. Then iTunes came around, and carious PC apps so anything you burn today with play fine on a CD player without MP3 support.

Hope that helps some.

I bought my 07 Touring with the expectation the 6disc change had MP3 capability, it does not. We have an 07 Sport here at work with the Preferred Equip Package that included the 6disc changer, spoiler and side sills and it is not mp3 capable.

The only way to get mp3 is by buying the optional accessory. I was more than a little pissed. I think Mazda is a bit decieving in the brochure.

I added the aux mod, it was simple, cheap and works perfectly but if anyone wants to buy my 6 disc changer to add to their 5 I'd sell it and buy the dealer 6disc/MP3.

I don't know why any car manufacturer doesn't have aux input and MP3 available on all models.

Yep, it's pretty rediculous. Given that the 5sport my dealer had in the showroom had 1 option and 1 option only. A 6 disc in dash MP3 changer. GRRR.

Anyhoo. My auxmod will be here in a few days so it's no big deal. I just find it rather annoying that the lesser model sitting in the showroom had a better stereo than mine does. You'd think that if someone ponies up for a upgraded model of a car you'd give them the best equipment available...
