can anyone diagnose this sound?

Recently my car has started making a very odd noise. I have tried to record the sound so you all could hear, but no recorder would pick it up.

The sound happens when I am stopped and let out the clutch. It sounds like the engine is making a weird electric-like ticking sound. When I press in the clutch, the noise seems to wind down quickly until it is completely gone. As soon as I let out the clutch, the noise returns. Another noise, I am guessing it is related because it sounds to be the same pitch happens when I am slowing to a stop while in gear.

I am pretty new to the MSP, and I have searched for diagrams of the engine bay so I could tell you where the noise is coming from, but have been unsuccessful.

If anyone has the slightest idea, let me know and I will try your suggestions. I appreciate it!

sounds like a throwout bearing gone bad to me
craig

i would think it would be part of the clutch too....but i brought it in to mazda for the sound, and they replaced the clutch under warranty. now it just seems like the noise is getting louder. it also gets noticeably louder after driving for a while.

could it be that mazda just did not replace it even though they claimed to have?

Does the noise happen when you let out the clutch in first gear to take off? Because I am having a problem that sounds like yours. Only mine makes a ticking noise when I am taking off in first gear. And it doesnt happen all the time and only when I have a heavier load on the clutch.

no, at least i dont think so. if it does the engine noise is too loud and overpowers that noise. the noise is constant, the only time it is not going is if the clutch is pushed in.

Did they replace the throwout bearing too? Or just the clutch?

When you drive do you keep the clutch pushed down (even slightly) for convenience at lights/stop signs/heavy traffic or do you pull your foot off whenever you're done with the shift? I don't mean all the time, just often.

It's most likely going to be your throw out/pilot bearing. I just recently brought my car in for that same noise. I don't know about the US but here in Canada, apparently they have gone to a new "policy" if you will, that they will just replace the whole transmission for you. That's what happened to me.

i rarely keep the clutch pushed in when i am stopped at a light. for quick stop signs i sometimes keep it in, but not always.
