2000 Protege ZM 1.6 DOHC
I changed the timing belt, and it ran terribly, then not at all.
When I removed the plugs, all four were very wet.
The cam timing marks were one notch off each. The intake cam was rotated too far clockwise, and the exhaust cam was too far counterclockwise, moving the meeting point downward between the cams. I didn't realize it, because I was looking down on the whole assembly when I changed the belt, and didn't have good perspective.
When I discovered the error, I moved each cam away from the other, bringing the meeting point of the gears upward into the centerline between the two camshafts. I placed a thin dowel across the cam center bolts to make sure I was seeing everything correctly. Intake mark is now exactly 3:00, exhaust is exactly 9:00.
Crank notch was aligned with block casting mark. Cylinder 1 was at tdc, as confirmed with a wooden dowel. Cylinder 1 cam lobes were both pointing out and away from the cylinder.
It runs again, but horribly. Huge smell of gasoline. What the heck is going on?
Plus, the fan belts are squealing like mad, and I know they're both tight.
