Calling Down Pipe Owners!!

i have the corksport and i like it noticable gains and not a lot of added noise and the divorsed set up is kind of cool looking and is an efficent set up. i just have DP 2nd cat is still installed and stock cat back.

What kind of power gains do you estimate you got with the DP alone?

Anyone know which mod would yield more power, the CS DP with 2nd cat or a test pipe that deletes the 2nd cat with stock DP...?

The downpipe is the primary cat. If the second cat fails the car wouldn't even know. I would say that the dp is the one you want to replace then. It also allows the exhaust to freely exit the turbo not slam into a cat and that contorted pipe.

While we're on the topic, anyone know if the 2nd cat unbolts or if it needs to be cut out? (It's cold out this morning and I don't want to go check...)

Maybe its just me, but if you aren't going to moniter if the cat even works, then why put it on? Unless they did it knowing that people are going to gut it, much like Nissan did with the boost restricter on the R32 GT-Rs.

It is a bolt on front and rear piece.

I'm sure its an emissions thing most new cars come with 2 cats. Why our second is unmonitered who knows but it works out great for people who want to take them out.

i have had some CEL codes but i called corksport and there echs called me apperently i have one of the earlier ones all i need to do is reem the nonfouler a little and mine is good really not a big deal to me all new ones are set up right. tech was saying i was only the 2nd person to call about it. second cat bolts on with those spring joints. power gains seat of the pants would say as good as cai was so that should put it in the 20hp range ive seen # elsewhare cant remember where. now in second gear if i open it up i will start spinning the tires this is NOT after a shift this is putting around town then WOT. both pipes should take same amount of time i did in 2-2.5 hours normal for weekend mechanic is about 3-4 hours

Great post AutoX. I too have these exact same questions.

I am stock except for the MS CAI and I am looking to either:

1. have a stock DP and no 2nd cat

2. have a highflow cat in my DP and no 2nd cat

3. no 2nd cat and that's it.

All of this with the stock CBE.

Anyone know the best sound/power/price combo? I want to keep it as quiet as possible.

#1 is a test pipe several are avalible around 150 bucks.
#2 CP-E is the only high-flow catted dp and its a DP and Race pipe in one. Its also 737 bucks or something nutty.
#3 is um the same as #1
The only other high-flow cat readily avalible is on the Vibrant DP back exhaust which defeats "all of this on a stock CBE."

I personally feel your better to remove the cat that is right at the turbo. Add a Short style DP (Corksport or Turbo XS) and leave the stock second cat. I would love if someone could flow bench the 2 cats to see if one is more restrictive.

There is a video of the Corksport DP/MP and stock CBE floating around here someone, sounds very nice. The only thing I wonder is how it affects flow going from three inch to 2.5, but I wonder if it is enough to really make any difference. That far down the line, I would wager the loss/gain is hardly noticable, if any.

Yeah, sorry about that, I guess that's what happens when you're trying to do work and post sometimes. Time for a break (usa)

Yeah, $700 whatever is alot of bones. Know anyone who has done this?

Eh, I might just hammer out my 2nd cat and leave it be. Maybe go buy guitar hero III with the money saved.

So the Cork Sport DP with the stock 2nd cat is as good as a CAI...???
If thats the case, thats all I need to here!!! (burnout)

I spoke with Ken at PG and he suggested I dish out for the CP-E DP (to do it right the first time around) or just go with the test-pipe. He does not suggest to go CS DP with stock 2nd cat!!! He said you'll get all the flow just to slam it in the 2nd cat...

The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning to the CP-E DP with high-flow cat. According to CP-E, the high-flow cat vs the un-catted version has only 4-5 HP difference...

But I really dig that divorced gases design!!!!!! Why didn't CS make a catted DP...?????????(huh)

Because they get in the way. I'd say if your gonna crank out for the CP-E Catted Downpipe, just get the full CS turboback set up from PG. Its about the same price.

I really prefer CS TBE set-up...but I want a cat!! I've had cat-less exahusts in the past and the fumes are horrible for a daily driver...

I have the Cork DP and Vibrant DP back which has a cat in it. Ken did it for 950 a while back. A bit more than 700+ But its a turbo back.

ATTENTION!!!

I just got an email from a viable source informing me that BEGi is making a downpipe!!!!! Its going to be released sometime in the first quarter of 2008.

I might just have to wait for this one instead!!!! I'm hoping they'll make a catted divorced gases one!!! WAHOO!!!

Details yet to come!!!

Autox--

You said your Miata was catless, right? I had a 1st Gen RX-7 that was catless, but I didn't have any problems with the fumes. I think one of the main differences between the MS3 & the RX-7 and a Miata is the sheer distance you are from the fumes. I think the reasons were twofold--1) the distance from the exhaust, and 2) the fact that a solid top is between you and the fumes. (Granted you have a ragtop between you and the stuff, but if you're going top down...)(scratch)

It might be worth the ~$400 one can save...just a thought.

I know!!!!! I've been racking my brain thinking that the CS DP with Mid-pipe is the cheapest, best route to go... But I am a little worried about the fumes... People following me when I used to drive the Miata had to switch lanes cause it was so bad... When I stopped at a traffic light I could smell the exhaust if the wind blew my direction...

I'm seriously thinking about it!!!! Thanks for rubbing it in... LOL

But if BEGi is planning on coming out with a catted divorced gases DP, then I'll just have to wait for that one.
I'm willing to be the Guinea pig for this one!!!!

In the meanwhile, if I can get my hands on a CS Midpipe, then I'll do that for now... PG said they are in back-order. And I don't want SU version...looks cheap and its more expensive...though, they are like 40 mins from my house... LOL

I'm not planning on ordering either (DP/MP) till after the new year, so it looks like I'm gonna have to hit up BEGi to see what the word is. Maybe contact StephanieT and work that Colleyville connection.
