just painted the front ones red. It turned out awesome, I definately want to go with the black and red theme for this car. Used duplicolor kit that came with cleaner and paint. It was painted on with brushs not spray and looks great. People will prolly think I have a custom big brake kit. I love how noone around here knows about MS3's!!! (washington state)

i just did mine too with the same kit so it probably looks something like this mabey a little different if you got some new wheels

What color did you used? it match the true red color pretty good

I really, really want to paint (have painted?) my brake calipers black. Is this done much?

I believe the Duplicolor kits come in Blue, Red, Black? and Yellow?. Black is a cool color for calipers, not so pronounced as red. I tried Duplicolor Red but was not happy with it so I stopped after painting the craddles for the front calipers. I took the the calipers off, apart and removed the pads to do this. I'll end up doing powder coating.

Just painted my calipers last weekend using both the Duplicolor black and red kits. Painted the calipers red and the mounting brackets black from an idea from Captain KRM P5 on my previous thread on painting brake calipers. Also swapped the stock rotors for some cross-drilled ones. I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out. Had to add 3 coats of red to make it look "right." Mine's not a MS3 but maybe it'll give somebody some ideas.

I did mine black this weekend. The main motivation was the fronts were looking really bad already with 4,000 miles on them. I used a caliper painting kit I got from Tire Rack. It includes a can of brake system cleaner. The paint itself is a two part high temp epoxy. You mix a bottle of hardner into the can of paint and you have four hours maximum. There is plenty of paint to do three coats on the calipers plus I did two coats on the disk hats and still had lots left over. The finish is gauranteed forever to not peel. I used the same stuff on my previous car and it was still nice and shiny after four years.

straight up that caliper kit by duplicolor sucks, the paint will start to chip my brother did that to the 3 when it was his and i noticed alot of my friends used this kit and noticed that their calipers are all chipped and wouldnt doubt it that in the long run everyone that used the duplicolor caliper kit will get paint chips in their calipers, i used engine enamel red (the spraycan) it stands the heat and wont chip i would recommend this for everyone and i didnt even need to remove the calipers, both front and back are painted i have no good pics of the car showing the calipers but i will post pics of it tomorrow

Basically any paint you put on will chip if the surface isnt properly prepared, So everyone keep that in mind, I would sand everything down, spray it down with brake parts cleaner and then wash it down with rubbing alcohol, maybe even use a tack cloth. I TOO AM A BIG FAN OF ENGINE ENAMEL, thats what I always used. Im not really a fan of using a brush to paint anything on a car, so Im not sure if I would personally like the duplicolor kit myself. Im going to use my dremel and grind all the coarse coating off the caliper, then sand them down primer seal them and then give them a nice glossy coat of silver, and then wet sand and buff the crap out of them. The red looks nice on all the colors except cosmic blue, which I have. Ill be sure to post pics of the calipers and my new rims. The red shows through the stock wheels a lot more than I figured, looks nice!

I think red only looks good on a red car. any other car and it stands out WAY too much. I just did mine in silver this weekend. And I really like the looks of it. I will post pics later..I has been raining and the car is just a mess

I really like Rotus's black paint job, looks good!

Big Red Calipers - a weekend project

Hi All,

Well after many hours of dismantling, prepping, masking, painting and reassemble the calipers on my Speed 3 are RED!

I started on Friday night and worked around my kids schedule (that means the wee hours of the night) got them done on Sunday night at 1 am. I knew it would take a long time painted my Miata before and liked the results so much that I had to do them on the Speed 3. Be prepared to spend at least 8 to 10 hours if you want to do it right.

First thing I noticed - These brakes are huge. The rear sides of the front calipers look better than the front side that shows threw the wheel but oh well.

For those of you that have squeaking brakes apply some synthetic grease to the backs of the pads I noticed that only two of the eight pads had a little grease from the factory.

Also changed my brake lines to Cork Sport Red Stainless Steel lines not that I needed them they just look good. I think I need some new rims the 10 spoke design does not show off the caliper enough. Maybe some Mazdaspeed Rays in smoke chrome!

How to adjust the rear brake caliper (parking brake adjustment) I was trying to put back the last rear caliper and it did not want to go back on well it was the first rear caliper I took off and was checking out the parking brake spring little did I know that it self adjust and it didnt fit anymore. I had extended it a little more than it was when coming off. Thank goodness for the internet at 12:30 am - who do you call? A pair of needle nose pliers and a little twisting (clockwise) with a small bit of pressure I was able to push back the piston and everything went back together nicely. No extra parts either :).

Attached are some pictures. If you have any questions about the install or brakes in general give me a pm. Also my speed 3 only has 400 miles on the OD so Im still braking it in. Cant tell you how much of a difference the Cork Sport SS Brake lines do but they look nice!

Cheers!

Peter

Nice JOB!!!
And yeah, the stock MS3 wheels have always been a sore spot for me. Get some really nice open spoked wheels (light colored on the TR's, if you'd ask me) and put 'em on there. It'll look much, much better, imo.
What the HELL was Mazda thinking to choose those wheels w/a +52.5mm off set????
How many coats in all?

Oh!! May I also suggest some Anti-Seize on the front of those rotor hats and lug studs? Use it VERY sparingly though or it'll get everywhere. You'll be cleaning A/S off wheels, painted calipers and rotor hats for months to come. (lol)

Forgot to mention: I used the G2 caliper paint - two part epoxy - three coats in all - the first coat takes the longest but the 2nd and 3rd are pretty quick. I purchased it at Hubcapsplus.com for $35.00 including shipping. I used 1/2 the can on the front calipers (with much left over) and 1/4 of the can on the rear (not much left over). Have 1/4 left over for other things or touch up due to spring clip placements. This stuff does not chip or lose its luster - my miata had glossy brakes after 60k miles and 4 years. This was a total off the car job - thats why it took so long. But the results are worh it.
