Caliper dust boot???

Ok guys/gals. I changed my rotors and pads last week and while doing so i realized that my right rear caliper (the slider pin) was totally seized.

So i ordered a used one off of car-part and just recieved it today...
When i looked at it to make sure it was working correctly, i noticed the rubber boot on the caliper piston was torn and it looks as if the piston itself had spun in the housing.

My question is, are the rips in the boot going to hurt anything? Also if the piston has spun will that be a problem??

The boot keeps air and dust out of the piston. My experience is that as soon as you have a rip or tear in that boot, the piston will sieze and cause your rotor to warp (and your mileage to go down).

I'm currently looking for someone who sells a replacement. I haven't found any yet, which means that I'll have to replace the caliper. Luckily it's only $65 at advance auto.

If anyone knows where I can get a new dust seal for the front brake calipers, please tell me!!!

The piston can spin around in there, that's no problem. In fact the rear one has to be spun when changing pads.

Ok, I found some made by Centrix, on Amazon.com thanks to some other posts on the forum. I bought 5 of them, just incase!

If anyone needs one, let me know and I might spare one!

So you bought the front ones correct...

Oh and thanks for the reply, i just greased the hell outa the boot to keep dust/dirt out.

The rear piston seals are only available in a rear caliper seal kit from the dealer. The part number is GAYE2646ZB, and the kit is $62 on OnlineMazdaParts.com. This kit includes seals for both sides of the vehicle.

On the front calipers, the piston seal is also only available in a front caliper seal kit. The part number is GAYR3326Z, and the price is about $46 on the same website. Again, this covers both sides of the vehicle.

Edit: I searched on RockAuto.com, and there actually is a caliper repair kit made by Dorman, which includes new piston seals. The part number is D352735, and it specifically says it covers the GAYE2646ZB kit that comes from Mazda. Best of all, it is only $2.52. Makes you even more aware of how messed up dealer pricing is for little bits of rubber. For $62, that kit should have some sort of indestructible polyurethane piston seals or some s*** :)

I too need to replace a front caliper wheel cylinder boot on my '03 P5. I didn't see one on Amazon, and on Rockauto.com I only saw a rear. Were you able to find one other than the $50 "kit"? And can this be replaced w/out taking apart the whole caliper? It looks like you should be able to just swap it out.

There's no direct fit kit for the front caliper - you can try getting the rear kit and seeing if stuff fits - it's only $2.52 you're out if it doesn't work. If you can't find any seals, you can get a rebuilt caliper on RockAuto.com for $35 that has all new seals. It's sad that you would have to take this route, but it seems that nobody wastes time rebuilding calipers anymore. :(
