CAI = cold air intake. The stock air filter box, and some aftermarket intake setups, pull air in from inside the engine compartment, bringing in warmer air with it. A CAI usually pulls air in from a location outside the engine bay, like the fender or behind the bumper, depending on the design of the car. This pulls in cooler air, and cooler air burns easier inside the engine.
