i have a 1.6 1999 mazda protege lx. and i wanna get a lil more out of it so i ws thinking of getting a CAI or a SRI. i cant pick which one. which ones better, and where can i get one that will actually fit my 1.6 ive seen them all over for 1.8, but rarely for 1.6. i also need to know exactly what ill need, im not good with this kind of stuff yet, im still learning. also, does anyone have one of them and wanna share your review on it. thanks

I did my own custom cai, i like it better than the sri i seem to get more torque off the line because it's outside the engine compartment sucking cold air instead of warm or hot air like the sri does and it sounds amazing up front under acceleration without having to put a muffler or exhaust system, and the piping is always cooler or cold after a drive so you know it works. that's my short review.

seems like a CAI is the way to go... now to just find a how to make ur own CAI thread.... hmmmmm

i have a sri myself, and I have to agree with the hot engine temp. I have a heat shield which helps a little, but not to much. Honestly, the CAI is better for performance, but it also brings up worries of water getting in there easily, if I were you, I would look into one of those bypass valve majiggys to trap excess water.

I JUST joined the forums and JUST bought the same exact model you have, some of the first things im going to do is let it breathe better. headers, CAI, corksport ES, etc.. i'd say definatley a CAI over a SRI. also a quick little mod i did was remove the bumper fixings (the little black things that look like "mesh") on my front bumper... improves air flow and engine temp minorly, but for 0$ lol - i also took off the grille, but thats only if you dont mind the aesthetics of the car going down.. but no grille = MASSIVE cooling difference.

orgzmk... i like that idea. idk about removing the entire grille tho. idk i was thinking about getting a new grille anyway so maybe ill just do that for now. something to think about. now still... where to buy a CAI for the 1.6 protege. havin alot of trouble finding this. help me out. lol

where am i buying it tho. WHERE. WHAT SITE/STORE i cant find anything. i found one on protegegarage, but then i saw the picture review thing and it said it was a shortram not a cold air and that bugged me out a lil. so ya. 1.6 protege cold air. where/what site/store

im not sure right out of the box, u may have to cut some type of gasket between the MAF. its what i have, and had to do to get mines to work. im not sure if there was much difference, but its very tolerable. and no it runs fine.

ok i bought one of those do it yourself CAIs from pep boys, and ran into some trouble. i had it all set up, looked great and all the connections were tight, and then i went to start and it didnt stay started. we figured ouit that it has something to do with the MAF sensor. its lined up the same way as the stock, and everything and its in there good, but it still wont work.. suggestions!?!? helppp ASAP.

well i needed to revert it back to stock obviously...cause it wouldnt run. i was told the MAFs are very sensitive.. can i use a different MAF or adjust it to make it work.?

ok. so i put the sensor in, and i thought maybe it was just too muuch air, but when i put it back to stock with the open airbox, the car started fine, which is eccentially the same thing as the cold air. im thinking the sensor is either in too deep in the pipe, or not deep enough, im not sure. its so weird. it should work. but the sensor is just... doing what its supposed to be doing... being very sensitive. lol
