CAI for MSP

2003 spicy orange MSP
i want to get a short ram cold air intake for a msp, and in the future a DG carbon fiber hodd with NACA duct. i have read that the msp engine is the same as the mp3... but like i said, trhat is what i have read. anyone know if the AEM intake made for the mp3 will fit???

i believe the vented DG CF hood comes with an intake to make the best possible use of the vent.....

and because they added a turbo, while the internals of the engine remain the same, the instake piping has changed and things have been moved around to accomodate the turbo and IC....

look at pictures of the 2 engine bays, I dont think its a good assumption that MP3 parts will fit the MSP

Hey guys..

I brought this up with dpmmsp and sonic_rs in our mini meet today about getting a CAI or SRI for my car. Looks like if we do go with a CAI, you'll need to re-locate the windshied washer fuild else where. I'm not sure where else in the engine bay the tank can be fitted nicely?

Maybe Mp3 owners can tell me where they relocated the tank. Pictures will do just as too good.

I just checked the AEM site and they make a CAI for 2001-2003 Protege MT. Would this be the perfect fit for a MSP?

There's a lot of plastic black piping that i'd like to replace with some silver shinies...;)

Thanks.

As slug420 posted, I also don't think it's useful to look at the MP3 engine as an example, when figuring out an intake.

I'd like to see the engine bay in person, to get a better idea of what's possible. Considering the limited production of the MSP, it may not be a great idea to wait on an aftermarket tuner to develop an intake.

But then, most of the consumers who purchased or will purchase an MSP are probably "enthusiasts," thus raising the percentages, so companies might perceive a viable market. Time will tell, I suppose.

limited edition, so you are saying that if the tank is moved that the intake will fit nicely? if i get the carbon hood then i would have to get rid of hte tanks all together anyways.

nattyboy513...
Yup, it will fit nicely. The tank will need to be relocated though. I have no idea where in the engine bay you wil be able to fit the tank nicely.

Don't even think about going w/o a windshield washer fuild tank!

just use rain-x or that new thing they use on airplanes...water just sheers right off...back way when they used the one windshield wiper for the euro look...or my ricer friend said it looked "cleaner" with NO windshield wipers. he was SOL when it rained. heh

guys....ANY intake that is currently out there for the Pro is NOT going to just fit right into the MSP......as the entire intake system has been moved around some with the install of the TURBO....

but if you want to see where the COOLANT TANK can be moved with the install of a REGULAR CAI ..... here ya go....but his may not work with the turbo setup.

Sir Nuke
You are right. it's a coolant tank and not the windshield washer fuild tank! I barely know my engine bay :'(

If all it requires is to move the coolant tank off to the front side of the car, i think it is possible to get the CAI.

But there is a good chance that it won't fit because of the extra looping it has to go through the turbo before entering from the air intake. Am i right on this one? I'm soo lost...someone just install a CAI intake on their MSP and correct me if i'm wrong..This is my first turbo car and my first Protege......

Btw, Sir Nuke, your The Injen intake looks really nice in your engine bay. Very clean! (rockon)

i agree with limited, nuke's engine is sweet like pie... but i simple short ram would eliminate the twisting, and AEM claims yeilds more hp. is the movement of the coolant tank enough to justify a void in warranty?

is getting an intake your first modification? I'd really like one in my car as well. it's just soo quiet in this car. i want to be able to hear the spool up. And the intake growl. I think AEM/injen will need to make a specific application for our turbo MSP in order for the intake piping to fit.

I doubt moving the coolant tank will void the warrenty. i bet they won't even notice it! Remember, if you don't complain about a problem, they won't void nothing!

is there any science to making a CAI?

Could I just get the filter off a p5 or mp3 CAI and have a shop bend/make some piping that will attach to where it needs ot attach and bend wherever it needs ot bend to get it someplace cold?

No, any intake designed for a regular Protege, or an MP3 will not bolt right up to the MSP. Regardless if you move the resevoir or not, the intake piping is not the same. On a MP3, the CAI runs from the hole by the fender, across, and to the TB. On an MSP it would be about half the distance, because of the piping dropping down to the IC. Looking at Sir Nuke's pic, the piping for the MSP drops right about where it says "Injen" in his intake.
slug, getting someone to custom make some piping was how I am going. Because I'de also like to get rid of all the platicky piping at the same time. I just need to find a place that can bend some piping easily, then find someone that can coat it properly.
I wish I didn't have to wait soo long to get my MSP, because I have a ton of idea's that I'de like to try out.

Anyways, hope that helps.

I have a Injen CAI in our MP3 and the coolant tank is moved...I aksed injen about a CAI for the mazdaspeed and they said nope the current on will not fit without "extensive" changes.

They are thinking of making one for the MSP.

I aksed Injen about filter cleaning intervals since it is a relative pain to remove the filter...they suggest every six months or 20,000 miles but air will flow regardless ?? Anyone have a recommended cleaning interval....we have 15,000 KM ( 8000 miles ) on the MP3 and installed the inatke at 5000K so the filter has very little on it.

I have order a K&N drop in filter from PerformanceIntl.com., $ 30 usd shipping included for the mazdaspeed which should give me some better airflow without going for a cone etc...I will use that until a real intake comes out.

I ordered Mazdaspeed floor mats as well from mazdasouth.com since in canada we get screwed with protege mats...

Don't even have my car yet....seems kinda dumb but oh well

Actually, Ihave to disagree with most of you here...I took a ractive sri and threw half of it away, but managed to get one of the pieces to fit and point almost straight down and it works great, now it was about 2 inches longer it would be perfect...I will take some pictures today and post for you...
