burning oil like crazy... wtf?

if it ever stops raining outside i'm gonna do that compression test, but ****** if im gonna go piss around in the mud right now...

Wait a minute! That much oil burned and clean plugs?
I suspect a leak - maybe only while runnning and pressure is up. It has to go somewhere...

it'll suck if you have oil in your radiator, you have a cracked head, the water jacket cracked. and then your gonna need a to flush the radiator out.

pasadena is right, since the oil expands because of the heat, it may be leaking only when its warm. i forgot to mention that.

i had that happen when i spun my rod bearing, my engine dumped all kinds of oil and metal shavings into my coolant. you should see the inside of my overflow tank, its not pretty. but i had a coolant flush done on it, so im not runnin all that crap through my engine anymore

If all that crap was cleaned out by the flush what's to see on the inside of your overflow tank? Didn't that get cleaned out too?

ITS GOING TOWARDS THE BIG BLUE CLOUD OF SMOKE BEHIND MY CAR!!
the plugs are covered in black soot, but so is my muffler tip. they're not fouled or anything

its running rich. i would stop running that car because if you run tooo rich, your gonna hear knocking in your motor.

if you can smell gas on your plugs, then thats unburned fuel sitting on the plugs.

make sure all your intake work is fine. everything. including the manifold.

or it could be wat i mentioned before. bad piston rings on a certain cylinder.

i use premium gas to avoiding knocking. never had a problem when i used regular, but i switched to premium when i put the long reach plugs in just to be safe. i thought all our cars ran rich? i haven't noticed any unburned fuel on the plugs...

what kind of reading should i expect when i do the compression test? around 100psi sound right?

haha that might explain alot... i only tested one cylinder before the hose came out of the valve. i have to go pick up a new gauge

lol yeah a proper working gauge might help just a weee bit!

Thread Jack:
On a side note im leaking oil bad now! I'm still tryign to figure out ifits my rear main seal or oil pan. This weekend ill have to throw the car up on ramps, clean the bottom end of the motor with shop wrags. Then take it for a short drive and throw is backup on the ramps to see if its the oil pan or rear main. Sound like fun right? If its the pan who all thinks that it would be a good idea to replace the bearings while I have the pan off beings that the car has 153k on it.

End thread jack:

Sorry I had to thread jack as I feel that what I mentioned above about how i'm going to try and find my source or oil consuption or leakage might. It help someone else latter on down the road.

did a compressions test last fall and got 180 across all cylinders. it definately sounds like a bad ring.

ok so i bought the car used from a dealer but i also bought warranty (thank god). is this considered a rebuild or a new motor? my synchro rings in my tranny are all worn out too, so if i'm going to make a warranty claim, i might as well do it all. I have a $200 deductible, i should tell them to replace the a/c controls too.

chill. Just trying to help here...

-soot is normal - we all have it.
-is the smoke from the tailpipe itself (confirmed/visual) OR could it be oil dripping on the hot exhaust/cat and smoking? This would have a big cloud of blue smoke as well.

If truly burning - the plugs would be oily/gooey. Soot means normal for us - so i still tend to believe it might be an external leak.

i didn't read back - so please forgive me - but did you put this on a rack or jack it to see completely underneath?
(yupnope)

i just had the oil changed at the dealer and i went under the car with them. there is no oil leaking anywhere on the outside of my motor. and yes, i got my dad to rev my car so i could make sure the blue smoke was coming out of the exhaust pipe. I got a new compression gauge today so i'll do another test

compression readings warm @ WOT? (remember to disconnect your coil packs and injectors ;))
