so my car's gone through 4L of oil since my last oil change. there's 115,000km on my car and ever since i had the stealership change the timing belt at 100,00km i've had crappy gas mileage and the car's been burning more and more oil. any ideas why?

just for s**** and giggles check your oil presure sendign unit above the oil filer. My car was going though oil like that tell I figured out what was going on.

pressure test your engine. if you have low air pressure in a certain cylinder, you have bad piston rings and are having blow by.

check your pcv valve aswell. thats a cheap part, you should replace it and see what happens.

make sure you have the correct weight oil being used. tooo thin of an oil will probably burn away. you may need thicker oil to compesate for the oil usage. that way it won't burn as much and possibly act normal again.

goodluck.

I'm goin thru a little myself but I have 65k, run 75-80 for 30 miles one way to work every day & run 0-30 German Syntec oil soooooooo, I expect to go thru a little-about 1/4 of a quart every 2-3 weeks or so.

External leaks?
Smoke cloud behind you?

'since the last oil change' says check the pan bolt and the filter. (duh).

Troubleshoot a little before just cryin', okay?

(i apologize for the harsh tone)

dont be a tool, of course i troubleshooted. even tried the seaform treated. nothin

You didn't tell us what has been checked. That oil has to be going somewhere. Let's have the complete list of what you've done so far, starting with:

1. Checked for external leaks? (Especially around the drain plug and new oil filter, since you say this happened since the last oil change. Also after the car has warmed up let the car sit in one place for a while, idling and gunning the motor every once and a while, then look under it, just in case it only leaks when hot and running, that is, normally only on the road.)
2. Checked for oil in the radiator fluid?
3. Compression check?

it'll suck if you have oil in your radiator, you have a cracked head, the water jacket cracked. and then your gonna need a to flush the radiator out.

pasadena is right, since the oil expands because of the heat, it may be leaking only when its warm. i forgot to mention that.

no leaks external leaks, everything is clean. like i said, its BURNING oil, you can smell it and see the blue smoke. it did not start burning since the last oil change, i've just burn 4L since then. it started about 15,000km ago when i had the timing belt changed. it's just been getting worse. the coolant is clean. the only thing i havent done is a compression test, which is what i plan on doing today.
what kind of pressure should i expect out of a healthy motor? just so i have something to compare to...
thanks and sorry about being snappy earlier, i definately had just woken up

how do i know if it isnt working properly?

Holy... has no one thought of timing???

Ever since the timing belt was done there is a lack of power and burning oil. It sucking oil past the valves... its losing power. These are both sign of improper timing. Take it back to the dealership and get them to check it out.

I would recommend you request they do this free of charge if this is indeed the real story.

Matt

I asked them about it and they said if the timing was off it wouldn't idle properly. Told them to check it anyway and they said ok but if i'm wrong they'll charge me for a new gasket and the labor to check it (shop rate here is $110/hour). I went and bought a compression tester so if that doesn't find the problem I'm gonna take off the valve cover and have a look myself. I have to repaint it anyway...

def might be bad rings. do that compression test, it should hold pressure if the rings are fine. if you lose pressure your having blowby on that cylinder wall hence meaning you have bad rings in that cylinder.

your timing also, i never thought of that until now that i read.

yeah i asked about the timing a while back when i was getting more crappy gas mileage and less oil burning

that idle comment is bulls***, you won't notice a bad idle if you are only a tooth or 2 off. I ran my old honda 180 degrees off. It idled fine but was completely gutless for power.

I hope they/you can figure it out and it is something simple

Matt

1. Check Timing. Procedure is in the ugly.net. Not too different from older cars.
2, Pull the plugs - see if one (or more) is oil fouled.

180 off omg lol

please tell me it was SOHC (boom06)

haha, yeah it was a SOHC. I had a custom made adjustable cam gear and it wasn't marked quite right apparently.

Just like when I had my OEM flywheel machined down and lightened they took off the timing marks...

good help is hard to find

Matt

i've changed plugs twice in the last 2 months. not because they were fouled though. i bought new ones then decided to try the long reach plugs. they work a little better, especially on premium gas
