Building a sleeper?

Just had a thought. Wanna pass it by some of you Mazda people for checks and balances.

Okay. I know the Mazda 3 is coming out, which means that P5s would drop in price ("new" and used ones) I hope. Or they'll be cheaper than buying a brand new car, which (when I have enough saved up) will be a Mazda 3.

Soooo... I was thinking of getting a used P5, putting on a bolt-on turbo kit (like Flying Miata) and an LSD of some sort (with catback and possibly suspension mods).

My aim is to keep the P5 body (no body kit) to hide the turbo and keep it as a sleeper, and use the car for spirited daily driving (not street racing) and autoX.

yeah If it wasn't for my exaust out the back you wouldn't know I did any other up grades besides my wheels.

Did I mention how much I love my exaust already. I'm goign to get a memory stick tonight and I will have pic of all my upgrades very soon

yep, that's what I've been doing to my ES, keeping the stock look. Hell, I even have the perfect color for it. Nobody would expect a "Sandalwood Metallic" with stock rims to have any get up and go.

Hoping to get it back today, it's been at the shop for almost 2 weeks. Everything is done, just need to finish wiring up the piggyback, and run power to my boost gauge's light.

Perhaps I am then... I'd much prefer to start with a more powerful platform than a P5 if I ever wanted to build a sleeper. To me the amount of money invested into the P5 to generate the sort of power I'd like to have would be better spent to buy a car with it stock.

Well, I picked up my ES in a moment of desperation. I needed a car, and I had to get one, my options were severely limited by the fact that my credit score was a 0, meaning I had no credit at all. Not bad, not good, just not existant. My father had bought 3 cars from the same dealership in the past year, so I called him up and asked if we could go down there and if he could co-sign. He did, I got my car for 15,300 at 11.3%; a horrid rate, but at least I am now building credit. Hell I even managed to get a Sears card. But that's enough of background, here's my thoughts on the car.

I started reading about it, and found out that this car is a very capable little bastard. The handling for it's price is superb. The cars have a high reliability rating, and from being on this forum, I learned that you could do a bit of tuning to approach the 225WHP mark and above.

So, I invested in Perfworks Turbo kit, it's taken alot longer than I expected, but I'll have it soon. Between what I paid for my car, and what I paid for his kit, and even what I have spent on my car's audio setup, I am still under $20,000.

I wanted a car that I could have fun with, make a ton of road trips in with a few friends, and still balance the fine line of being able to like the car I am driving by the way it looks and feels, but without having every little Johnny Ricer and Bobby Law get a hard on. My car thus far is doing everything I expected.

Provided you like the way the car looks, and don't go sticking body kits and stickers all over it, you can have a completely stock looking car. My interpretation of a sleeper is that you should be able to walk by it in a parking lot, and not have any idea that work has been done to it. My car has, and will keep, the stock appearance, Rims, body, suspension. I did change the exhaust to the Racing Beat Muffler, but it's really not that noticable. My car is the generic looking gold color, and the tint is light, similar to something you would find on an old persons car who doesn't like being blinded by sunlight. None of the audio equipment can be seen from outside the car, and other than the head unit, nothing else can be seen inside the car either. The in dash LCD, is nearly a perfect color and style match to the OEM interior. I've had plenty of my friends never notice the LCD at all. Some of them still don't know I have it. I do however have a habit of sticking 6 DVD cases in the passenger side door pocket, so some of them might notice.

To me, a sleeper just makes sense; no cops messing with me, no little kids trying to race me, don't have to worry about my car getting robbed, and it's more of a surprise when someone finds out the toys I have.

(headbang) Werd.

I know the P5 isn't all that powerful, which is why I'm wondering about modding.

Is the drivetrain perfectly suited for modding? Like, would putting on a turbo destroy your axles, like on some other cars?

I have been thinking on that...im now considering on painting black the intercooler, and all pipings, maybe using some plastic to cover everything.
But the spool tubular manifold is too noticeable.

Im even looking for a silent 2.5 exhaust system.

Micah, one sunny afternoon in august you'll have to let me tag along for a stroll in the completed project. I'm very eager to see/hear, etc.

Sleepers,

Hmm, some good sleepers were the ford contour and it's mercury counter part, with the V6 of course.

Maxima used to be a sleeper, 0-60 in 6.1, I drove one, and the only car so far to put a smile on my face so far is the P5

I have yet to drive my mothers I35 (she is going away for a few weeks..)

Is it worth a Turbo for this car, probably not, but that is my opinion, for the several thousand you can up to a mazda6, and add a couple more and you have a 6 with a V6, which then you have a real nice car..

I am probably gonna just change my intake, exhaust is gonna wait. Sound system, well, every one has their prefrences, cause you would probably do the same to any car..

The horrific looking Sentra Spec V is around the same MSRP as a P5, and had 175 hp to boot...

I guess the reason I'm looking into this is because P5s are really abundant, and with the new Mazda 3 coming in, there'll be quite a few ready to sell for "cheaper".

Was thinking then it'd be "cheap" to turbo my car because the actual cost of my P5 or Protege ES would be cheaper (since they'd be older).

Hmm.... how about... turbo + limited slip... or maybe even just limited slip diff?

You can get these from the factory, right? Since they're on hte MSP?

No problem, you make the drive up, and I'll kill a few hours with you. Actually I'm always being invited down to DC partys by some of my friends, maybe I'll crack soon and let you know when I'll be down. Don't count on it though, best bet is to come up later in the month. Actually, might be next month. We are still tuning it, and while it's pretty fun now, I'd rather wait to show it off until it's dyno tuned.

The boost is an awesome feeling, I don't see any reason I will have problems with my AT. I don't beat on my trannys. I'm all about the groove driving. Easy on and off the pedals, always try to flow with the car, never mash the pedal.

They do have a bolt on turbo kit, it's available for mazda racing members, but you still need to do something for the ECU, either piggyback or standalone. As far as the LSD on the MSP, I recall hearing they cost like $800 or so, and they also sell a Quaiffe for $1100. You'd be better off just getting the Quaiffe, IMO.

And yeah, while you could spend more money on the car initially, to get a faster nicer car. Most of us have picked up our cars at a decent price. I got my ES for 15,300(Oct 2002). Add the cost of my mods, and look at the end result. Show me another car that can be as much fun, and still fit the bill of a sleeper, for the same amount of cash; and I'll still probably love my protege.

Micah, I grew up in NJ and my girlfriend lives in Avenel. I'll actually be there this weekend.

I'll contact ya via PM and perhaps we can arrange something.

My two top choices for a sleeper car; 1st gen neon coupe with a SRT engine and tranny, or a 91ish civic hatch with a b-16 (Gsr) or h-22 (prelude) engine. I think those are the right names for the engines. Anyway, my friend has a tan one with a B-16 and it looks like total s***, but I was with him the other day and with that engine, the lightest civic body ever, and a Jackson motorsports supercharger, he beat a Z06. And he didnt squeak by the b**** either. He runs an 11.4.
