Broken M5

:
Mazda 3 & CX5
Well I got up this morning loaded my daughter into
the car to take her to Summer Camp. I started the car
and drove for about a mile to the ATM machine. When
I restarted the car it would not go over 5 mph. and the
engine light is on. I shut it down, and did what everyone
does and checked the fluid levels, all was OK. Started
the car again and still no power. Shut it down again and
let it sit for a few minutes. When I started it up again,
it seems to be working fine, still have the engine light, but
limped it to day camp to drop off my daughter and then
limped it down to my Mazda dealer. I am just hoping for
something minor, the 5 only has 3200 Kilometers on it.

Has this happened to anyone else??

Robin

Well you can be glad it'll cost you $0 to fix under the warranty :)

I have never heard of any car behaving like this before, but I'm quite interested to hear what the problem is. Luckily your CEL came on so their diagnostic computers will probably pick something up even if it behaves while the technicians are driving it. Keep us updated!

Ekk, sounds like it went into "limp" mode So far the oddest thing I have noticed is a little bit of Idle hessitation once in a while (just sounds like a bit of fluctuation in the Idle RPM).

DurhamProPhoto,

Do let us know what your dealer says when they diagnose your 5. I am preparing to go on a road trip with the family to sunny Okanagan, and would be curious to know what different problems other Mz5 owners have had.

Thanks!

Well the latest update from the dealership.

They have the car hooked up to the computer
and their heads in the tech manual. They have not
been able to figure out the problem yet but they
have 2 techs and the service manager trying to
figure it out.

I will keep you posted. It seems to me like some
kind of vapor lock problem, but we shall see????

Cheers,
Robin

Sounds freaky for sure. Wonder if it is Evaporator pump or Fuel Pump. Worst case the computer had a brain fart. Please keep us updated

The latest update from the dealership:

They are hopeful that it is a sensor / motor in the throttle
body that is the problem. They have to order the part from
Japan (They are replacing the entire throttle body)and are
hopeful that it will terminate the problem.

The dealership and the techies at Mazda Canada are guessing
that this is the problem, as they have never heard of such
a thing happening before.

So they have given me back the car for the time being and
advised me not to take any long trips with it until the part
comes in. Hopefully this week but more likely next week.

I'll let you know more when I do.

Cheers,
Robin

In our part of the woods we take the parts from a new car to keep ya running... we can wait for parts on the new car instead.

That's actually a really good idea, but yet my guess is A) they wouldn't even think of that option and B) they probably don't want to frankenstien their new car lot for parts. I mean, I know it's just the throttle body, but you'd be surprised how many parts are secretly etched with the VIN on a car, etc. And it'd be pretty embarrasing to have someone come in and say

"I want that shiny red 5! Here's my check!"
-----"Um, sorry Sir, that 5 is missing a throttle body at the moment."
"Come again?!"

lol.... but like I said, that actually isn't a bad idea if the dealership's known for their excellent customer service.

Back to the problem at hand, IMO this sounds like a legit fix. A lot more legit than vapor lock anyways :)

they should have given him a rental. That's not safe, what happens if this situation came back up while he's driving on the hwy and the ecu decide to go to limp mode?

I probably could have pushed them for a loaner,
but I don't need it. I can use the wifes Mz3 sport.
It is like driving a go-cart.

You are entitled to a rental as it is a minimum they can do.... btw missing parts doesn't mean I can't sell it.

The practice of borrowing parts from a new car is not a new one your dealer is just lazy... end of story.JMO

Does that mean your a Mazda salesperson?

When my baby was broken the service manager said that they 100% would have taken a part out of another car if that had been possible. In my case the part (ABS module) had to be programmed for my car at the factory. So it sounds like something they do if it's possible. But, he offered on that part because it was looking like a 1 month wait for the part. Other parts they have ordered have never taken more than a day or two to arrive.

They did that when we bought our 5. The radio antenna was broken off so the just took one off another car.

My neighbor's Mazda 5 had the same issue a couple months ago (limping, not going above 10mph, etc). When all was said and done the dealer apparently diagnosed it as a bad 'leak detection pump'. It's been fine since.

Ok I give up. What is a leak detection pump?
Is it part of the throttle body?

My throttle body is in so, it will be installed this AM.
I hope it cures the problem.

Cheers,
Robin

The Final? Update!

Well they replaced my throttle body on Friday
and all seems fine. I was happy with the approach
that they took.

"We believe the problem is with the sensor unit in the
throttle body so we are replacing the entire unit just to
be over cautious.

So I bought a bug deflector when I was there also
