Breaking in your Motor

i'm sorry u guys probably alreayd posted this, but how do u break in yur motor or whatever so it'll be healthy?

but, here is what I did

New from the factory, put on 500 Miles, then changed to Mobil 1 5w30, changed again at 1500. After that I changed it every 3000.

Opinions seem to vary on engine break in, here are some of the things you will commonly hear:

"Don't let it idle, you want movement and varying pressure in the engine so that everything begins to seat and/or settle."

"Don't maintain constant speeds, try to slighty vary, even if it's only 5mph variance. Never use the Cruise Control."

"It's important to coat an engine with Organic Oil first, then switch to Synthetic."

etc.

I don't know how accurate they are, but enough people have said them to me, so I tend to follow them. I also consider an engine in it's break in period for the first 2500-3000 miles. I'm a huge fan of early/often oil changes. You can't hurt anything but your wallet by doing this. Also, pull your plugs and check them for fouling/deposits and proper gapping. Check your filters, keep an eye on your fluids, basic stuff really. Honestly, I think if you get into the habit of doing these things, you are less likely to encounter any problems.

Another thing is don't mash the pedals, learn to use them smoothly. It's all about the load on the engine, pushing to the floor is rarely the answer.

good luck, enjoy your car.

This IMHO seems like a little too much work... I was just wondering for how long are you planning to keep your car?

Break in? What Break in. Drive it like you stole it. The "keep it under 3k rpms, granny shift, and materbate to the exhaust" is bulls*** dood. Drive it like you stole it. If you do the "everyone does it this way" break in, your not really BREAKING it in. there will be very minimal wear to the cylinders, rings, and valve train.

Once you get out of this "break in" and start pounding on it, your gonna cause all the metel to get into the engine, and pow, you got issues. So IMHO drive it like you were in the 24 hr lemans, and change to oil at 500 1000 and 1500 miles, and you will be fine, :D

you want to change the oil 2 or 3 times in the first 3000 miles. just to get any metal or anything out of it.. contaminants and such.. you have to remember.. if you buy a new car with 12 miles on it like mine.. there could be stuff floating around in the motor that needs to get cleared out.. just let it get in the oil.. then change the oil a couple times -=)

:bs: :bs: :bs:

You got to be kidding... "stuff floating around"...

Yeah they might've left a wrench in there so you'd have something to clear out... :D

Why don't you change your tranny oil for the same matter... or your brakeline fluid?

P.S. bs might be a little too much but there is no flag for misinformed...

I AGREE!
But dont "Drive it like you stole it!" ,
"Drive it like a RENTAL!"
Remeber this is your car,you will have to pay for any damage YOU cause.
I'm not soo down with the quick oil changes,I went 2500 before my first oil change and at that time I switched it to Mobil1 5-30 synthetic.
Modern engines do not require the extensive break-in periods of the engines of yesteryear!
Just my .2 cents,
Matt;)
