Ok, so I've done a small tuenup and oil change after I purchased the car as is at the dealership. It runs great! And it has some nice aftermarket things: cold air intake and nice wheels. However, before I take it into MIDAS or a service place..what should I do to maybe fix myself? Problem-> Everytime I slow down and brake from about 25mph and under there is the ungodly noise that starts sounding like : clank clank..only when I release the pedal and let it roll does it stop. I mean when I have to come to a quick stop it kicks in when I hit the brake. I'm thinking it's maybe the calipers..When I painted the calipers last weekend. I kind of looked around, but not much since I reallt dont know what to look for. I do know that the rotors are rusty as s****....let me know...Thanks, Dustin.

its hard to say.. more info is needed.. even a video maybe.. is the car shaken when it makes said noise?? is its coming from one side or both? does it sound like metal on metal???

PS. if the pads are low and need to be changed.. id change the pads.. bring the rotors to a parts store and get them cut.. and then take sandpaper to the rest of the rotor.. if that dont help or its beyond you take it in...

Brakes Re:

Sorry, the car doesn't shake..maybe a small amount in the brake pedal. When I stick my head out the window, I can hear it on the the driver side, but I'm not exactly for sure if it's coming just from the driver or passanger or both. However, I do know that it sounds almost like metal on metal. I can't describe in detail, but when ever I press on the brakes from 25 mph or slower, it starts up quiet then gets louder and louder and louder as I slow more and more. The loudest point is right before I stop totally, and it sounds like something is turning, but clipping against something that isn't. Should I take it in or try and service it my self, by maybe taking off the calipers and rotors and cleaning?

OK, didn't read the rest of the post. How would I know if the pads are worn? Never have changed them before. And about gettign them cut, do you mean get them drilled or what? I found 4 new pads and 4 new drilled and slotted rotors on ebay for like $180.

sounds maybe like your rotors have lots of rust.. now i dont wanna say buy new rotors.. as they can be cut if there not to thin.. but id pull the wheel off and look at the rotor.. if its got a big rust lip on its outer edge id take them in to get cut.. thell tell you if they cant cut them cuz there too thin.. then check your pads and see if your iin need of replacing.. but check all four.. inners and out.. if just one of any of them are really low.. almost touching the the metal squealers get new ones.. might as well since your in there... and make sure all the slides are free from rust and lubed up nice.. you can never have too much lube.. thats actually not true.. i just like saying that...

well, kinda sorta I edited it a lil to have it look liek I want. The wheels are the only thing different. I have chrome instead of black, But I will be getting soon...By the way...when I take them into a parts store do you mean like autozone or advanced auto ...and what exactly do you mean by get them cut, like get half of the rotor cut off or shaved or what? Thanks, Dustin

cut= machined. That's having a small amount of the surface removed using a lathe. But make sure you have enough thickness left on the rotor to do this- if it's machined too thin it will warp when heated up. Just make sure you're taking it to a decent shop that knows the tolerable thickness allowance. ( It might even mention the allowance in the "specs" section of your owners manual). Just a word of caution: shop around! Just because you go into a "Midas" or some other big name shop doesn't always mean your getting a decent shop. Wherever you decide to go, make sure to speak to the shop manager to get a good sense of their professionalism. Good luck!

on one of the ends of your outer brake pads.. should be the top if put in correct is a metal tab bent in twords your rotor.. its called a squealer.. the idea behind that is when your pads get low the metal tab touches the rotor causing the brakes to squeal... so you know when to change them.. if that tab is almost touching then you might as well change them while your in there..

re:

awesome thanks! I talked to a manager at autozone and they said they discontinued cutting rotors. And he didn't know of any place that would do this for me. So, I'm going to go ahead and clean my rotors off and see if that helps if not. Well, I'll prolly have to wait a few months before I can take it in or get some new rotors off ebay. But, I'll get some pics tomorrow when I get off work and take apart everything. Today, I was driving really slow and stuck my head out, but I can exactly pinpoint it. I know it's fro mthe front, but not for sure which side. Maybe I'll have my girlfriend help me try and find out where it's coming from. Thanks, Dustin
