Bought it, drove a week, killed it

02 P5, 06 Mazda5
I almost didn't post this, but figured y'all could serve as my support group. So, I'm an idiot. A complete idiot.

Took the P5 down to the Pisgah Natl Forest to meet a bunch guys for a camping/mountain biking weekend. Tried to get through a creek crossing I'd done lots of times before, but forgot about the friggin CAI. Well, it served as a great wet/dry vac. Sucked water into the cylinders and not it appears to be hydrolocked. Tried pulling the plugs, sucking out the water, shooting in some WD40, changing the oil and turning it over, but it wouldn't budge.

Am I deulding myself in hoping the shop I got it towed to will be able to unlock it? Likely bent valves? Broken rods?

Anybody got spare engine.

I think I'm gonna puke now...

Idiot.

o god, right there is prolly my single biggest fear with a cai, sorry to hear it bro

Doh....Mountain type trip or not..Keep your damn car out of the water....

Lesson learned I guess....and if yo got it good...its probably caused some damage that will need repaired.

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn...Not too many cases of hydrolock, some thought to be a myth. Myth busted again...damn man that sucks, are you gunna have to pull the whole engine?

Wow

You guys are so much more understanding than my wife!

My mechanic is gonna look at it tomorrow and give me a better idea of what I'm dealing with. I'll keep you posted.

Im afraid this is gonna hurt. Hydrolock is no myth, Ive seen it happen on a Ranger I was out wheeling with. It was a water crossing, got a little deep, ended up cracking the head and spitting out a spark plug. :(

Drop in pretty easy?

I've been looking at prices on parts that might be in trouble and they aren't cheap. I'm thinking (depending on how bad things are) that I might be better off sending Protege Garage $999 for a complete motor and putting it in myself. I've never tackled a job that big before, but my buddy has several times and it seems like a swap would be pretty straight forward.

Anybody done an engine swap? How tough is it?

What else would I need. Good time for motor mounts I guess- other stuff?

Thanks for the moral support.

Thanks sucks man. Hope you get it all straightned out. This would be a good time to throw a turbo on it - well, after you get the engine squared away (evil)

I don't know about a support group, but we'll sure help you spend your money!!(rockon)(yes)(rockon)

Sorry bout' your moto! You might as well start a fully forged build thread right now!(thumb)

yeah - find the wrecked MSP and pull everything...

Sorry, bro'... My condolences. I have had 'great mods' bite me too. Oh well.

Some Pics of the Drowning

See...it wasn't THAT deep.

My identity has been obscured to protect the innocent.

Is a little water bad for your exhaust?

Luckily it looks like insurance is gonna cover the new motor, MAF sensor...

Sucks to hear this!! I took my AEM SRI off the car for that purpose. With as much rain as we've been getting recently, puddles have built up everywhere fast!! Hope it all work sout for you!!!

So, will you be crossing water again in the pro5? lol

I guess an adjuster hasn't come to see the car has a CAI on it. If you hav ethe stockairbox, i suggest putting it on

one day you will look back at those pictures and laugh..... unfortunately until that point you will probably still feel like an idiot

sorry to hear this, but good thing that insurance will cover it!

Lift Kit

I was originally thinking about lowering the car, but now I wanna jack it up with a lift kit!

Lesson learned.

I actually considered parking the car before the crossing, but decided I'd be too lazy to carry my beer fro the car up to the campsite after riding the bike all day.

Kinda funny in hindsight.

That really sucks, hope the insurance will cover it. I was not going to install that type of intake for that exact reason...not with regards to water crossings, but there are several roads in my town that will pool water after a heavy rain for hours and sometimes they are literally 2 feet deep. On another forum I belong to, I came across the following link. With this in place, a CAI is now a realistic option for me.

AEM Bypass valve
