In the literature that I've read, the O2 sensor is described as being a cell that generates minute amounts of electricity. I remember reading about two ways an O2 sensor can gradually degrade.
One would be the obvious residue buildup that would delay sensor's response to fuel ratios and the other would be the depletion of chemical material used during electricity generation, which would actually make the O2 gradually dictate the engine to run richer and richer. This time is like 5-7 years if I remember correctly.

Then again I might be wrong.

I'm doing the O2 sensor replacement as part of a bigger week of changes (i walk to work). My thinking is that it will wear down over time, but i guess it is just catalyst depletion:

For heated sensors, normal deposits are burned off during operation and failure occurs due to catalyst depletion, similar to the reason a battery stops producing current. The probe then tends to report lean mixture, the ECU enriches the mixture, the exhaust gets rich with carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, and the mileage worsens. at 90K miles i'm approaching the rated life, and these engines run at high rpm so wouldn't more gas pass by in less miles?

I'm also lookint into changing my O2 sensor, I'm at 105k km.

not to get off topic but the second sensor would be upstream correct im gettin p0140 and im about 80k.
