BOSAL HEADER

STILL waiting on my friggin car! I called today and they said tomorrow. If I call tomorrow and they say Fri I am gonna be pissed. As soon as I get it I will post pics and share info. I would tell ya to be patient but mine is wearing out too! I am tired of driving a VW beetle damnit!

OK, got the car back. The header definately added more power, but it is hard to say how much and where. The car has alot more power down low, but I dunno if thats cause of the flywheel mostly or not. I will say one thing, the car is FRIGGIN LOUD! It is too loud actually. I have the header with a high flow cat and a Tenzo R muffler. I am gonna get a silencer put in.

The check engine light does come on. The header only has one hole for one O2 sensor, so the mechanic just spliced the other O2 sensor into the first one. Maybe if you actually drill another hole in the second tube of the header the light may not come on.

The only real pain was the EGR. The EGR valve on the Bosal is angled down, so the pipe going back into the intake has to be modified. The pipe goes up under the intake manifold, and to get it off you have to remove the starter and the axle. Then you have to cut the end off the stock pipe and weld it to a new pipe that is bent right. I wouldn't recommend it yourself.

If you plan on getting the header and keeping the stock exhaust then you will have to get the stock exhaust custom done so it will bolt up to the header.

I will post pics tomorrow if it is not raining.

Ok, so here is the real question...After buying it, and then having all the modifications done and all the work to get it put in, how much??

And, would be it easier and only slightly more expensive to actually order the header that fits correctly???

Overall I am not impressed with the header. It has a hole in it for one thing and it leaks. It doesn't feel like it added much. My opnion, it isn't worth the money to get it and get it modified to be put on. Either wait for someone to make an affordable header, or save for the turbo.

Are you planning to tune or change the ECU?

I read on other board that ECU have difficulties to manganes modifications. I also read that CAI Intake are not good for the Proteg, most of people are going with the AEM short ram who seem to be a lot better.

PatProtegeGT, where exactly did you hear that CAI aren't good for proteges? I read a document from Racing Beat talking about a prototype intake (http://www.racingbeat.com/FRprotege.htm) that said "An intake duct utilizing a K&N cone filter was produced for the car, and it got close to production when Mazda discovered that, due to it's narrow range of operation, the engine management system could not tolerate drawing warm air from the engine compartment."
Don't get me wrong, I'm just trying to get my facts straight. If you could let me know where you heard it from it would be highly appreciated. Info like that is very helpful. Thanks, Jon.
