Boost

So I finally replaced my stock BPV because It didnt seem to be leaking from what the AP was reading and my brother in law was keeping up with me with less mods so I was told that replacing the leaky fail stock BPV would help. The car feels way better! Spools quicker, recovers between shifts faster and AP shows me holding boost a lot more then the stock. But I am now seeing 22.5psi spikes and holding at about 18psi the spike seems a bit high. my Data logs show normal numbers all the way and zero knock. Just wondering if 22.5psi spikes are ok? this is only under WOT in 4th I believe.

sounds like you're right about where you should be to me or want to be at least, depending on your mods. Most of us see spikes of 20-22ish but drop quickly and only hold 15-16ish Which BPV did you go with?

Send me your old one?

From my experience I believe the stock BPV is designed to release boost at 21 psi. I wouldn't worry too much about the spike. My summer map is 21 psi but's that only with meth/water injection to cool the charge down.

I got the Forge BPV with the PING haha. But it's obviously doing a great job I would never spike that high with the stock one and I'm holding at about 18/19psi at WOT and feathering down to about 15/16psi It is making a big difference and I can feel it. I just dont want my car to go boom. It's not like I'm always getting on it or anything but you know there's some assholes on forums that start freaking people out with nonsense. Send you the old one ??

damn, u guys speak of boost spike as if it should be accepted. boost spike aint good. you guys should really get your spiking under control.

I always wondered what kind of pressure your boosting with your setup?

Was running 6.5psi for the past month. Last night I finished my 8.5psi tune.

Then I'm gonna work on 10psi tune...and that will be it for this year.

Then build my motor....run 18+psi......and go for 600hp for 2010

3 liters times two super 60's equals a lot a power on low pressure.

here i posted this im my car thread on 6crew.

this may help you understand why i mention aftermarket boost control

UPDATE:

a while ago i installed my Greddy ProfecB Spec2 electronic boost controller. i wanna say maybe 2 months ago.

anyway never really messed with it. i did turn the boost up once just to see what it felt like, but didnt tune for it.

anyway, for those not familiar with electronic boost controllers, they add a whole new spectrum to boost. the Greddy Boost controller and turbo timer are 2 of the very few things i have leftover from my escort. so the escort lives on, lol.

anyway, things like Gains, overboost control, alarms, lo and hi boost settings, wastegate fine tuning and Etc. are just some of the things EBCs bring to the table that MBCs cant.

so yesterday or was it the day before? anyway, i started finally messing with the fine tuning of the boost. i start at the 6.5psi that i have been running off of just the wastegates. i adjusted the "start boost" settings which allows you to fine tune when the wastegates start opening to hold the boost. Running off the stock wastegates, they start opening at 3psi, and are fully open by 6-7psi. the thing with them starting to open so soon is that the time to build max boost is increased due the wastegate relieving some of the exhaust flow by the time it hit 3psi.

i adjust this to have the wastegates start opening at 5psi instead of 3psi. this sped up my spool time and substantially increased boost response. some may wonder if the gates start opening at 5psi and im running 6.5-7psi........would that cause spiking? yes........but thats where my gain adjustments come in. the gain allows you to offset how fast my boost control solenoid opens in reference to how fast the turbo(s) build boost. by adjust this as well, im hitting max boost with minimal spike if any. and its holding boost pressure perfectly.

in the end the car gets to the punch a lot faster, so torque is increase more rather build sooner.

since i have currently fully tuned my car utilizing a cold weather tune and regular weather tune and fine tuned my boost control.

i have now bumped up boost to 8.5psi and tonight i just finished my cold weather tune for 8.5psi and started messing with my boost control settings. i am 75% finished with my boost control settings

and man.......6.5psi fully tuned with boost setting on par to perfection made the car even sicker. by just the boost control adjustments, it felt as if i added another PSI of boost.

8.5psi........yea, it doesnt sound like it would make that much of a difference. but you must understand boost and CFMs to know that that 2psi increase causes a SIGNIFICANT increase in power. especially when blow from two turbos. the fast spool and power is there without the lag of a single big turbo. 2psi typically can net 20-40hp depending on the turbo and tune, sometimes more. so do the math, im not saying i gained 60-70hp from 2psi.......but i will say this, with the nittos NT05 tires im running........

2nd gear spins, and 3rd gear unless i feather the throttle. but heres the kicker. LSD..........makes the car still gain substantial speed even while spinning. you can feel it spin, but only if you are paying attention.

in the work of my boy that was with me tonite "what the **** was that? did you just spin 3rd?" and yea this is granny shifting, dropping boost completly between shifts then flooring it. didnt use "no lift shift" nor did hard shift as if i was racing.

the more and more i fine tune every aspect of my car......the more and more i love it. BOOST RESPONSE is sick now, it was good before but now its great.

To the OP, how did you verify your BPV was leaking? I hate to say it, but I doubt it was really the issue.

NY, it seems that many have seen mild spikes (3-4 psi over boost targets) for a split second. I personally don't see an issue with that, as long as you're not getting fuel cut or knock while this is happening. On the MS6, boost control isn't really a great solution, since the ECU does a pretty significant job of monitoring and adjusting itself. The best solution in any case is to have a custom tune for your specific vehicle, whether it be AP or Standback, which are the 'best' tuning solutions we have at the moment.

Tunersteve, I confirmed boost leak when I replaced the BPV and then there was none....My PSI went up to target boost for the map that I'm running. When I was on the stock BPV I was not hitting my target boost and as soon as I changed to the Forge BOOM there ya go target boost and holding! Logged it time and time again. Car is running super bad ass and and I am hitting the boost I should be.

I'd love to see a stock vs. Forge log from you with your seperate BPV's on.
