Boost What To Do!!!

you guys made me show the pics :(

thats what happens when you play with your engine not knowing what you are doing (like i did)

my engine was rebuilt $2500 and two weeks after i blew it.

Please- DONT TAKE THE CHANCE.

I understand the frustration of catostrofic engine failure, and the cost. Rember I am a avid RX-7 fan. I am not condoning engine abuse, I am just sharing my habits and experiences

so what shot were you using?
just so the ones who dont know the story know since we're on the subject of pushing the motor.

Goddamn, look at that.

I agree, I've learned my lesson. My protege is back to stock. I'm buying a Merkur XR4Ti, a car that was designed for boost. If the thing blows up, I'll still have my protege to get to work, and this time I won't be worried aboiut making payments on a car that doesn't run.

Been running 10 pounds for 6 months, no problems, hit fuel cut about 3 dozen times. Don't be a pussy, up the boost.

and anyway how do you explain getting beat by an audi, vw, civic, teg, gst ?sr-t? V-6 V-8 I-4 I-6.

GODDAMMNIT THERES NO EXCUSE FOR THAT s***

PdHaudio...Didn't Reduce his timing...I was running the same setup as he was...AND I HAD AN MP3 ECU! I think his problem was related to some bad gass...

My sugestion On BOOST WHAT TO DO!!!

Leave it as is...Really...Mazda Loves to void warranties..and most people are not going to be able to afford to rebuild a new motor..or go to court w/ a Billion Dollar Car Manufacturer!

If I'm not mistaken, stock boost is approximately 6.9 psi. So going to 8 psi is about a 15% difference. If you guys think that this one change will lead to engine destruction, then you need to read an engineering book on mechanical design. "Usually", any stressed part of a mechanical device can withstand double the average load, of course this refers to a transient (meaning it's not held at that level for a long period of time). For those people who say their engines blew simply because they boosted to 8 or 9 psi had a bad engine to begin with. This assumes that at the higher boost pressure the ECU can still maintain a decent AFR. Judging from the super rich condition in stock trim, that shouldn't be a problem with 8 or 9 psi.

Increasing the load is a problem that would definitely reduce engine life, but that's not the real issue. The problem is that 6.5 psi is right at the limit for knock under certain atmospheric conditions. Increasing boost increases the risk of detonation.

Running Rich Doesn't Prevent Detonation! I helps to quite it down!

Tuning is the only way to prevent Detonation!

I'm pretty sure running 8-9psi is just fine. I haven't done it yet, only because I can't afford a controller right now. Some things to invest in when raising the boost. Gauges: Boost gauge for sure(oil psi, and A/f also would be a good idea), colder plugs, run as high octane as possible. And when you get a boost controller, try to find one that really prevents spiking in the boost. I'd go Elecetric Boost Controller over Manual, cause if your running, and notice spiking you can just lower the boost from inside the cabin, and not worry about pulling over to lower the boost. I personally wouldn't run higher than 8.5 to 9 psi of boost wothout investing in Forged interanls, engine managment of some kind, FMIC, Fuel Delivery upgrades, and alot of wishful thinking. It is safe to run 8-9psi, if you know what your doing. Take your time, don't rush into it. Do research. I've done this. I know waiting helps, as when I first moved into the turbo world, I thought it would be ok to just up the boost to 15psi with no major upgrades. If I said, or even thought that know, I'd kick myself in the head. Point is, know what your doing before you raise the boost. Also, when boosting higher than stock, consider the load in your car. Don;t go boosting 9psi with 4 adults, and a trunk load of stuff, it puts more stress on the engine, you don't need that.
