Boost Spike?

On my daskhawk yesterday I saw my bost spike up to 17psi a few times but then I saw 19. I remember reading about people having boost spike with some mods but is this anything to worry about? You can see on my list I don't have any real hardcore mods done.

yup i spike at 19-20 then drops and holds 15-17.. its normal...i bet ur car is crying for dp though..

Ok cool because I have a Turbosmart MBC I'd like to install something soon and I was hoping the spike wasn't something outlandish. I'd love to do a catted DP but there is so much work involved in getting the sensor out plus some people still get CELS...blah....I'll do a diffrent TMIC first.

Depending on the AP map I'm running, I've seen consistent boost spikes to 22 PSI while holding 17 - 19 PSI. That map was nuts, gave me occasional boost cut on WOT and just generally scared me away from it. I'm running a more modest map now but I'm really anxious to get it dyno tuned when ATR gets released on the 20th.

I don't think you have much to be worried about yet. Expect higher spikes when and if you go with an upgraded IC though.

Getting the sensor out was not a problem. Soak that mother with PB blaster, rent a sensor socket (has a slot in the side) if you don't own one. But I used a performance exhaust shop to do the DP because it is very difficult to get to the turbo studs and nuts and an absolute disaster if you twist them off.

I observed the transformation while the car was up on the lift -- you have to first remove the intercooler (no big deal) and then have to work both in the engine bay and also from below in order to get the DP off and replaced. It took the pros (two guys with lots of experience with race prepped cars) two hours to make the change.

But it was well worth it in gains, especially in hp and torque gains earlier in the power curve, broadening and fattening up the power band as much as or more than absolute increase in peak hp and torque.

MS is your DP catted ??? I had an issue with my exhaust a little while ago and no shop would even look at my car when they saw I had removed a cat (midpipe). Its a fed crime for a shop to work on the exhaust of car with tamperd cats.

Cool I'll keep that in mind about the DP. For the reasons Coyfish mentioned I do want a catted DP though which is always quite a bit more. With my AutoExe bumper on the way even the new TMIC is gonna have to wait till winter/next spring. Anyway I have all I can do to keep traction now and my MBC isn't in yet. Thanks for the insight everyone

I don't know why people say it's so hard to get that sensor out...if you get an O2 Sensor socket and have a can of PB blaster it's not an issue. I got mine out in less than a minute both times I've had to take it off (once initially and once to wrap the DP)

I've read many posts saying it's nightmarish. Then you're boned if you actually snap it off in there. Maybe they were just cutting corners or so something. I have some spray stuff that probably puts the PB blast spray to shame. Like I said I catted DP is in my future...just the farliy distant one.

the turbosmart MBC is fantastic. You will actually have less spike than stock. My boost shoots to my desired level and slowly falls, no spike at all.

dont get a catted downpipe, get a non-catted.. turob-xs dp/rp combo for example, felt a big difference after that mod.. cats r wak

TurboXS DP/RP is not catted. You can always get your local performance shop to weld a high flow cat and O2 bung into the RP to meet your state emission test if you have one.

We don't have emission tests, so I'm running without cats. Take your car to a race prep performance exhaust shop. Just tell you you bought the car to autocross or road race and will not be driving on the street, if they ask. A ture race prep performance shop will probably not ask any questions. Mine did not blink an eye. They had several circle track cars and a modified alcohol drag car in the shop at the time. That's the kind of shop you need to look for. This is not a Midas Muffler kind of job.
