boost controller question

What type of gains will you see if you put in a boost controller without any other mods? Is this even a good idea...I've heard some say that without less restrictive exhause, etc...upping the boost is pointless..but others have used boost controllers w/o other mods and gained some power. Also should I go manual or electronic? I was thinking manual would be easier to remove so I can save my warranty when I take it in to get serviced...I bought the extended warranty, so I'd like to keep it..

yeah well those who said it wouldn't do anything lied! Yes very good addition. dont go past 9 psi without and fuel mods or anything , 9 and under you should be fine. I personlly like mine it has 4 channels and an off mode. Now as far as warranty goes, even if you take it off (depending on the tech) they will be able to tell. Save the money and go with the electrical one. my suggestion is an SBC-iD but expect to shell out like $500
 
So i could go to 9 and the stock internals should be ok..what about bov..that would be ok for 9 right? What kinda of gains have you noticed..? As far as manual/electronic...I can't afford an electronic and spoolin said there was a good manual one for like 90 bucks (forgot which one)...I think don't need an elec controller cause I wouldn't mess around with it much after i found a good level of boost. How would the service techs tell if a manual controller was installed? Is there a way to hide an electronic controller?

yeah these run super rich from the factory, l,ike i said keep it below 9 and you should be fine. Now the stock BOV after you boost up leaks like a son so it would be a good idea to get a new one. Now you will still notice a diference. They can look at the lines and see if they have been cut or misplaced which wont ness. void your warranty but it can make them curious. Thats the reason i have mine mounted in the cd pocket under the radio so I can close it
 
What about under the hood..can they see anything for the elec controller?

Chris, I've yet to check out your boost controler setup. Just trying to get Ideas for mine.
 
I would think that a boost controler would be a great addition even if you kept the boost at stock levels. Why do I say this, simple, if you stop the blow off valve from leaking boost early on in the rev range, you loose power due to boost leak. If you can stop this from happening via a boost contoler, you can keep the same amount of boost on the engine for a longer time. This would give you much more power lower in the rev range without turning up the wick.

What would a boost controller do if you left it at the stock level? Can this be done with a manual controller..?

Sure, I'll try to explain myself here.

If you can stop the blow off valve (via the waste gate inside the turbo) from "leaking boost" or "bleeding off" ie, not holding a constant pressure before you reach 6.9 psi, you can create more power without even turning up the boost pressure.

This can be done because you are creating more boost (by not allowing the blow off valve to tell the waste gate to open) without turning up the boost pressure. Does this explain it at all?

Here, try this: If you are on the gas, and build 2.5psi, the blow off valve will immediatly start bleeding off pressure if you do not give the car more gas. This is done so the Mazdaspeed will get better fuel economy. If you can step on the gas, create the same amount of boost at the same throttle position (2.5psi) without having the boost bleed off, you are creating more power. Your engine will also have better throttle response. This can be done with a electronic controler (without increaseing the stock pressure), I'm not sure if a manual one can do this without having to increase the boost pressure.
 
If you can hold boost, you can make more power. This holding of boost can be done with a boost controler that has a "hold" ability. This creates more power and better throttle response becasue your engine is already underpressure, it does not have to build boost.

I kind of understand, but I can't afford an elec controller right now so was looking to get a manual one..just for a little extra boost..not much.
