What's going on guys? The other day I was on the NJ Parkway and all of a sudden the motor started ticking real loud, and then it sounded like a blender full of nuts and bolts, and the car was smoking like crazy!

So first off its an 03 protege5 that just hit 100k miles. I've had a rather quiet tick in the engine for the past year or so. I thought maybe some valve chatter or something, never took it in (I don't know why!).

But anyway, theres a fairly large whole in the side of my oil pan, coming from the inside to the out. Does anyone have any idea what it is? I'm guessing something shot through, like a dropped valve maybe?

if the hole is on the block or oil pan, it was definitely a rod. Makes me nervous as you are NA and Im boosted sneaking up on 90,000 right now.

Definitely a broken rod. There is no way a valve would have made it down and made a hole in your oil pan as you describe. My guess is it starved for oil and boom. I am afraid to say it but it is time for a new motor.

Sorry to hear that man, my car is pushing 108K and has a tap in the lifter area.(Knocks on wood) But replacing the motor with the same is really really easy. Problem is, is that you have to find a good motor for it's replacement. Also I'm sure someone will chime in pretty soon and tell you that you can go with a KL.

hole look like this?

and if you fish around in there, or drop the pan - you'll prolly find at least one of these.....

I've kinda heard the same sound near cylinder 1 but no CEL and no hole anywhere from what I seen. This makes me worried

im about to post a picture of the hole...i havent taken it to a shop yet, and i cant do this myself. but yea a rod sounds right then. this sucks! is it able to be fixed, or do i definately need a new motor?

the original valve tap started from no oil...but then i put some lucas oil in it and have maintained it great since then, but it finally pooped out on me. the oil was full when this happened, but i guess it was time considering it lasted 2 years

If there's a hole you will need a new engine, the block is toast. If you can get the car to Notheast PA I can get it fixed for a very reasonable rate for you.
