roduction of the Mazda RX-8 coup has been halted by a major factory fire in Japan. The blaze started in a paint-drying furnace at the Ujina 1 plant in Hiroshima, 400 miles from Tokyo. It took emergency crews seven hours to extinguish the flames, and the neighbouring Ujina 2 site was shut down to ensure the safety of employees. A UK spokesman told Auto Express that the impact of the incident on worldwide supply of the RX-8 is still being assessed. "It's too early to tell whether this will affect our operations, but the factory was due to close down over Christmas anyway," he said.
The incident started around three hours after approximately 1,000 workers had begun their evening shift. All were evacuated, and no one was injured. The swift action of the local firemen meant the damage was restricted to Mazda's Ujina 1 factory, where models including the rotary-engined RX-8 and the Japan-only Demio supermini are built. Annual production at the two facilities totals more than 500,000 cars.
The company's stock fell by 3.1 per cent when news of the incident hit the Japanese markets.

No, it's the same event as on this thread:

http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91905

The latest update is that the U1 plant is re-opening Jan 6, but for Demio/Mazda2 production only. The U2 plant next door also builds Demio/Mazda2, so during the Christmas break, Mazda constructed the necessary items for the Demio's to be painted at U2 and then return to the U1 line for the rest of the build.

However, this thread being in the RX-8 side, RX-8 production remains halted until further notice. There is a 128-day supply of RX-8 in the US, so there is still enough supply for now. However, for those who are waiting for (or want) the RX-8 Shinka edition, you'll be waiting for a while because they only started making those in Nov, and the aim was for only 500units per month.

miata's are hosed too right? At leats last I heard...

and since they were tooling up for the '06 anyway... an '05 might be quite a rare item ;)

Yes, Miata and MPV down as well. But there is a 183-day supply of Miata's in the US.

awesome, maybe there will be less of these ugly hammerhead shark looking under powered cars around.
