Bike Rack?

This is gonna be an odd question....

I want to get a bike rack for my car but the only option I have is pretty expensive and I would rather do something that is stock on our cars. I understand the P5 comes with an adaption type thing for bike racks. Would anyone know if you can install them on the Sedan version. I own an MP3.

I looked up "adaption type thing" in the parts catalog but it wasn't listed. Sorry. :)

I think you'd be the first one to attempt such a transplant--probably be less of a headache to blow the coin on a Yakima.

Saris bones 2 or 3 bike highly adjustable adaptive strap on rack for the bumper/trunk would probably be easiest & most cost effective. I use one on the P5 when I have kayaks or cargo box or surfboards on top or if bike's are going to get muddy. That way it doesn't end up on the roof of the car. It has nice rubber feet that have not marred my paint either. A bit more aerodynamic for more mpg on long highway cruises with no dead bug coating on bikes too. I'm sure you can spend 500 or more to get yakimas or thules for your roof tho. I have the fork mount ones for the roof too that mount to the factory racks but I know, yours didn't come with a factory rack.

I had a Thule rack and an adapter kit from Thule for stock cross bars with a channel down the middle.

You have to pretty much take the stock rack apart to get the adapter in there, but once you do, it looks stock.

I have a Thule kit specifically for the Protege5 roof rack. You just need to buy the bike trays. I can sell them for cheap if you want.

HAH...I looked at what people wrote below...$500? Not looking to spend an arm and a leg. I looked up those Yakima ones and they have some on sale for like $50-$100 so I think I will consider those instead of Frankensteining my car up on the roof. Any of you have the YAKIMA LittleJoe 3 or YAKIMA King Joe 3? Those are the two that seemed best for my needs.

Where? And which pieces cost 50-100? the bars? What about the towers? What about the clips? What about the trays? What about the extra doodads that complete what you need? Everytime I've looked at these anywhere except a used setup they were 400-500 to piece together everything you need. You say you get a whole setup for 50-100? Where at?

^Works for me too. No gripes. Keeps the rack free for kayaks.

I spent less than $100 on my total setup. It's not really Frankensteining the stock roof rack, it looks stock and is totally reversible. The reason you have to take the rack apart is to remove the rubber strips in the middle of the cross bars to expose the channel. Then you slide the t bolt in the channel so you can attch the tray.

Cool, I woulda done that. I thought they all had to use their own crossbars & such so I just went with one that clamps to existing factory racks since I had cargo box, the kayak racks & pads for surfboard/windsurfer that all use the factory racks as they are. No mods for any of them. Just bolt'em on & go.

It was on a webiste but these are rear mount racks that hold on to the trunk. They are good with an MP3 wing as well.

Aw man yeah, the saris 2 bike back one was about 85. It has a wing to clear too. I meant the Yakima ones up top being 400 or whatever. My xport 2 bike fork mount that mounts to the factory racks up top was 135.

I checked on the rocky mounts site and found these adapters. I think this is what you can use on the stock crossbars, but you should call them first to make sure. The square pices are what fit inside the channel.

If you go to Yakima.com or Thule's website, they each have a "fit my car" kind of thing that will tell you exactly what will fit on your car.

You can get one bike on top for $413 with Yakima. Each additional bike will run you $100. These are the new prices, of course. If you know what you're looking for, you can probably cut that price in half by shopping Craigslist, Ebay, etc. for used stuff.

Here's the breakdown of what you'll need for an MP3:

It's not that hard to find someone selling their Q-towers, clips, crossbars and a bike mount or two for $200. If you can pick up a deal like that, all you need is to get the right clips for your car ($60), and you're good to go. The Q-towers are (mostly) universal, it's the clips that make the towers fit your car. I had a Q-tower setup on my LX, it fit well, and it's a lot harder to scratch up your car with a roof rack than with a rear rack.

Avarela, do I remember correctly that you're in the Houston area?

Here's a listing for a Yakima bike rack for a Honda Civic, including 2 bike mounts for $200! All you'd need is the right clips, and you're set! Also, the Si that year could be fitted with or without the "Q stretch kit." If he had one, which you don't need, BTW, you could sell that and get some of your money back. :)

Houpro5, what you're suggesting is for the P5, Av has an MP3.

I think he was trying to get something on teh cheap. Looks like teh Rockies wif teh adapter will set him back just over $100.

oh, I have extra caps, but they are attatched to extra wheels. I'll PM you.

I get that, but he doesn't have a roof rack, so there's nothing for the Rocky Mounts Adapters to adapt to, is there?
