2001 Mazda MP3 turbo
SO, i went to have my turbo mp3 inspected for the second time yesterday and it Failed yet again. The last time he told me that it had to go through all of its drive cycles because the previous owner let it sit for two months without a battery in it. so he told me to keep driving it around for a few days , then bring it back. so, i drove it around scared as hell about getting a 275 dollar inspection ticket ( which would suck ) before i brought it back yesterday. And boom, failed again. he gave me a printout about what was wrong with it. he said that the computer is reading that my 02 sensors are not working. he looked at them and said that everything looked fine but he did not want to take them out because of the aftermarket work done to the car etc. so i figure im going to go to my local performance shop and have them take a look.
HOWEVER, in the meantime. does anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong. i mean im skating on thin ice here driving without an inspection. so any clues are well appreciated . :(

i understand the concern, but dont you guys at least get a big red R rejection sticker.

here in MA, if you fail you get a rejection sticker that lets you drive without worry of cops for 60 days while supposedly attempting to fix the issue.
additionally if you get rejeceted by an inspector once, the next one is free.

what do you have for an ecu ? msp?
if you have any piggybacks like a unichip or ss afc, i would take that out first until the issue can be tracked down.

usually a failed o2 sensor should result in a cel, i would think. do you notice any bogging in lower gears or odd amounts or black smoke from the exhaust?

what type of aftermarket stuff is the insepection guy talking about?

its an mp3 ecu i know i have to change it but i have to get the money first. theres no piggyback either. but yes the check engine light is on. but its weird , when i change the oil it turns off for awhile. yesh they dont give you a big red sticker in ny.

well, i would be sure to carry some rejection paperwork for the cops, if you get stopped. sometimes they can be reasonable.

as for the 02 sensor, did he scan the car for trouble codes.
usually it will just say something like 02 sensor low signal or some crap, not the most helpful, but if thats the case, it is at least a reasonable place to start.

maybe you can find other mp3 owners that have had this issue and they can tell you which 02 sensor.
i dont have an answer for why an oil change would fix it.
