Scary, but I can see this becoming mandatory simply because you might not be able to find a carrier who doesn't require this. If insurers see a big bottom line increase, you can bet these programs will become the norm instead of voluntary. As a "spirited driver" I can definitely see my fun per gallon rate decreasing. (notcool) My driving habits haven't changed; I've earned my low rates by knowing when and where to indulge myself. All that would change with a program like this.

I read an article very similar to that months ago, what a crock of s***, I dont know why anyone would be dumb enough to want that, theres no possible way it could help you. That info will only be used against you.

I live in the middle of no where and on an occasion I have had to do the hurry up and drive to get home for the bathroom and thats about 10 miles of no places to stop for a bathroom so something like this would litterally cost me out my ass because when I gotta go I add alitte extra to the gas peddal and brake hard and fast for turns .

imagine this on a car that gets autocrossed. THAT would be hilarious?

Haha insurance companies are always promising your rates could go down and wont go up, then your next statement its higher andk you ask them why and its some marker adjustment or some crap they make up. No way this could help the consumer.

Insurance in general is a business. They're never trying to save you money, just make them more money. I'm sure the add-on device helps somewhere in their margins.

Technically, all cars already have "black boxes". If they really wanted to, they could tap into that.

Agreed 100% about the "black boxes" part. It's kind of scary to think about what companies and the govt can possibly already know about you...Not that I have anything to hide. (sssh)

As I was reading, I was thinking the exact same thing...

eh. just unplug the bloody thing once you get to the event site, and replace it before you leave....might result in maybe a mile difference for a short course...

I figure once these things really take off (you know they will), someone will engineer a device that will "adjust" the ODB-II output...

I should do this. My car sits in the garage all the time now. I've only put on about 2600 miles since September. I should get free insurance.

But...when I do drive it, I DRIVE IT. So, probably not a good idea.

The article I read did mention something about unplugging it or turning it off, then insurance companies will automatically figure your doing something you shouldnt and raise your rate or not give you the discount. They always have you by the balls.

In reference to the current "black boxes", I think they only store a few seconds worth of data, like the moments leading up to a crash. This "improvement" is much more of an invasion. The thing that bothers me most is the assumption that spirited driving leads to more accidents. Whereas this may be true in some instances, I think there are a lot of bad, inattentive drivers out there who are also exceeding the speed limit. I promise you, when I get behind the wheel of my MS6, I give it my full attention.

There are also some legal issues with using black box recorder data, since the owner of the car is the owner of the box, and the data in it. You have to give consent, theoretically, at least, to allow police to view the data.

lol I ought ot add this to my truck. I changed the oil in it last november and still haven't put 3k on it.

This is all sorts of wrong. This will only hep the insurance companies get more money. Rate hikes for "parking in certain areas" or driving at certain times." They always introduce programs like this As " it will make you life safer" or It will help you save money" s*** like this is how they implement more and more ways to control you. Next thing you know they will be issuing tickets through this.

And by control. I don't mean physically. What I mean is they will put that idea your always doing something wrong. Therefore controlling the way you live.

2 words: ****. THAT. If they want to send someone out once a year or so like the damn power company to check my mileage? Hell, sure, go for it. GPS devices tracking HOW you drive? Uh... no thanks.

I just remembered, does anyone recall that thread about TPMS being able to be tracked in the event you had committed a crime, they can track the radio frequency ID's of the TPM sensors and trace you like that.

I tell ya what, it's not long before it's like Fast & The Furious 2 with that high tech car stopping s***.
