Beware Mazdaspeed Cold Air Intakes

Had a Mazdaspeed CAI installed on my car last fall knowing the "small" risk of hydrolocking the engine. Just a small warning for those out there considering installing one: DON'T! My engine has to be replaced at $8100 because of water ingestion. Have only driven the car in moderate amts of rain, through no standing water or puddles whatsoever. The "disclaimer" on the installation instructions simply states, "If you anticipate traversing deep water, remove this system and replace it with the original equipment intake system. All warranties are null and void if water is ingested into the intake system."

The CAI didn't really seem to improve power much, although it did sound neat. Definitely wasn't worth the cost though. And I do mean this car was never driven through very much water at all--surface water only!

Wow thats rough man. I have a Cp-e intake but i dont think it matters which one you get, if its able to suck in water its going to. From where my filter sits it seems pretty hard for water to actually get there. I actually ran it threw a machine wash today and had no problems.

Im sorry about that though man.

How in the world did you hydrolock with the CAI? Are you in Bloomington MN or IL? I never had an issue with the Mazdaspeed CAI.

You literally would need to pretty much submerge the filter completely for it to suck up water like that. If you said you didn't drive through any standing water or extreme puddles, it doesn't really make sense.

Excatly what I was thinking. I have drove through some good storms and a few winters with CAI's, no issues at all.

Hehehe, there are lots of Bloomingtons out there....

This definitely doesn't make sense unless you submerged it.

I live in Bloomington Indiana. I know the car wasn't driven through anything other than just surface water on the pavement or minor puddles. I was told it can happen as a cummulative thing and that eventually one or more of the rods bend as water accumulates in the cylinder causing pressure.

All I know is I am out 8100 dollars and this car never "transversed deep water...."

Interesting. Sounds to me that they are just blaming your blown engine on a CAI. It wasn't hydrolock, it was a snapped rod.

That really sucks dude. We did have a lot of rain though. You go to IU?

Edit: Bwahahaha, I should have read this post. Water accumulating in the cylinder!!! Those thieving bastards.

Yes they are bullshitting you so they dont have to pay. Any small ammount of water would evaporate from the heat of the engine and not pool in top of the pistions.. That is total BS

Off Topic, nice new car Bakrauf!

Do you miss the MSP at all?

sounds like wherever youre getting it fixed ripped you a new one. if you havent had it fixed yet, dont get it done there.

you can ask to see the parts of why it has ot be swapped. I had my scort with a cai for 4 years and it only locked on me whhen i did go through a puddle higher than where the filter was, not till i got out of the puddle did th emotor die and it didnt bend a rod, it shut down and stopped!

Check to see why!!!

Ask them to put that explanation in writing and send it to a lawyer. Does anyone know If SEMA can help with something like this. Someone needs to help this man get his money back. Maybe my friend from louiseville can help, he weighs about 34 ounces and his name is slugger.

But seriously they are lying and you need to have talk with them

More like this

Mechanic 1
s*** we have to replace the motor and its gonna be on us to pay for it

Mechanic 2
Just blame it on the CAI and point at the warning label.
