Hello fellow Speed3ers. My question is what time is the best time to do my first oil change? Do I change it after the 600 mile break in period or just wait until the 3000 mile interval.?

Manual says for Schedule 1 to replace engine oil and filter every 6 months or 7500mi with 5w-30 (turbocharged engines) whichever comes first. Schedule 2 says for every 4 months or 5000mi, whichever comes first. Your frequency will depend on how often and hard you drive your vehicle. New engines nowadays can go as much as 10,000mi or more without changing engine oil (depends on model and manufacturer).

My Bimmer is 15k.

I will change every 5k-6k with synth.

do you guys have any alternative syn oil rather than mobil 1? that stuff is alot of money.

pennzoil platinum is probably the cheapest alternative, all the other 'boutique' synthetic oils (redline, amsoil, royal purple) are quite more expensive than Mobil1

I find it best to change the oil after 5pm. I've done this with all my cars and have never had a problem.

syn at 5k!

I personally think that doing an oil change with synthetic oil at 5k is just a waste. Syn oils last almost forever. The new VW's run 60k oil change intervals.

The manual recommends regular 5-30/5-20. Synthetic oils last at a lot longer, just do some research online. Don't waste your money by changing with Mobil1 at 5k's.

If you are still paranoid about the lifetime of your oil, check this thread out, there is a link to a company that tests oils.

I will be changing my oil at 2k and will be using mobil1.Then I will change every 5k or so.I dont care what everyone says about how long it will last,It makes me feel better to do it at 3k to 5k.

Whatever makes you sleep at night!!! just kidding buddy

I agree with an early first time oil change to get the particles out. I did one at 2k and then again at 5k. Now every 8,0000km (to keep my warranty) with synthetic. I probably don't need syn oil either and i don't even have a turbo!! But it helps me sleep at night as well!!

Just get a UOA (used oil analysis) done by blackstone labs to see what your interval is. BTW, the synthetic OIL will always outlast the oil FILTER.

VWs do NOT run 60k oil change intervals whether you are talking 60K kms or miles. They have 5000 mile services. That's what I was told, and that's what I've seen outlined in the maintenance pricing structure as it was a consideration when I bought my car.

YES they do, maybe not in the US.

My uncle (lives in Germany) just bought one and he changes every 60,000KM (according to manual). The oil costs $30/liter though!!

I can't remember if it is Diesel or Gasoline.
I found a link, these guys are talking about it. They are saying that their '03 Golf needs an oil change every 30,000km or 2years. Use Longlife oil.

You want me to give you a contact number for VW?

PS: They also put alot more stress on the engine, due to the constant city and Autobahn driving, and still manage to do an oil change only every 30,000/60,000km
