Best mileage out of a full tank of gas?

I have read what you guys are saying and I doubt you will believe me. I am not arguing with anything just telling you what I have found. I have run my car for a week after the light comes on before filling up. The needle is way buried past the last tick and I have never, ever put more than 13 gallons in. Usually around 11 or 12 tops off the tank. I'm not saying my tank was completely empty but it had to be really close. I have taken two 700+ mile road trips to the same place in the last three months. I always filled up with a quarter tank left and usually put about ten gallons or a little more in. I s*** you not I was getting 380 to 400 miles on three quarters of a tank. Needless to say I was pleased with this. The only time I got less was when I used the A/C. I have a manual 2.3 '04 hatch with aftermarket 17in wheels(that I think are heavier than stock cause it feels a little slower...) and a cheapo cone filter job I rigged up myself.

That's normal in my car. I usually get to around 375 or so before I hit a quarter tank, but that's not all highway.

I don't wait to fill my car up that long. But my best mileage was 36.4 mpg, just the other day. I started driving 5 mph slower on my commute--70 mph now. Made a big difference.

my 06 3i m/t with the 2.0 engine got 39.6 mpg/hwy the other day. Average speed was 65mph with A/C on.

Where are you guys shifting to achieve this kind of mileage. I might have to try that. Would be painful as I always speed, but with gas prices... I could just be more reserved and liven it up ONCE in a while. I get about 22 all city driving.

I usually shift less than 3500. Do you live in a hilly place? That can affect gas mileage too. I live in a flat area and drive pretty conservatively.

My drive is pretty flat through Vegas, but I have a lead foot. When I did my BSD install (first performance mod) my foot grew about 5 lbs heavier and then the intake and exhaust added more weight. I can't keep off the gas :P Always going zoom zoom zoom :P

I'll try the shifting low thing and see where it gets me.

I just took a trip the other day and actually paid attention to the trip. I was at about 420 when I was just under a quarter of a tank .. I have a trip up to Iowa comming up .. and I am planning on watching it closely and pushing it as far as I can. I want to see what I can get out of her.

dude wtf!?!?!?! I have been over it so many times in my head. ow are you guys pulling these numbers?? I have a mazda 3s and if I drive to a quarter tank doing like 70-ish the whole time and trying to barely touch the gas, with no a/c on and all the windows and moonroof closed, I'm around 260ish. Well that's also the "quarter tank" mark which isn't really the actual quarter of the tank.

Do you guys have like intake and exhaust systems that improve your mileage that much? Also, do you ever more than barely touch the gas?

I normally try to drive like 40-50 mph around town, so I'm in 4th and 5th gear most of the time, and I don't accelerate hard (unless I want to zoom. I mean how can you resist tank after tank) but I still get around 270 or so on average when the light goes on (around 11-11.5 gallons)

Am I retarded at driving stick or something? Or do you all drive Mazda 3i's so you get more gas mileage?

Figure out what your actual mileage is (none of this "around" stuff and appoximate numbers). Reset your trip odo at every fill up and divide the number of miles by the number of gallons you just put in.

Write it down in a log book.

Miles per tank is meaningless. Every fuel gauge is different. Miles per gallon is the only true measure. The "appoximate" numbers you posted equate to 23-24 mpg which is definitely on the low end (especially if you're driving as gentle as you say you are) but may or may not be bad enough to indicate a problem with the vehicle.

My max mpg is just over 34 but my average is still around 27.
Also, my gas mileage went up when I installed an AEM CAI in my '04 3s.

Another thing I've noticed is that my engine likes RPMs. If I putt around in 5th gear all the time, I actually get worse mileage because the engine is working harder at those low revs.
If I'm traveling under 40mph, I stay in 3rd.
If I'm under 60mph, I'm in 4th.
The only time I use 5th is on the freeway.

ok, see, maybe I'm just not using a low enough gear. I sometimes get around 27 mpg, and I have gotten 32 mpg once going average of 80mph with the windows down, so maybe my 3 likes more revs too. I think it also depends on what gas I put in. I notice that my 3 likes Getty gas and hates Shell.

I can get to chicago with a little more then half a tank its a 175 mile trip so about 350 or so alot of heavy city driving

I feel Better Now

If I am doin all highway i constantly get over 35 mpg.

And each time i have taken a major trip i had to sit in a traffic jam outside of philly or wait for construction near atlantic city. If it weren't for the 45 minutes of idling i know i could get 36 mpg.
i drive a 3 s with a 5 speed. I try to cruise below 70 mph but when i exit the toll booths i race like hell so it isn't like i am driving completely economical. so yes i have got about 425 miles with 12 gallons gas and i still had a cruise range of atleast 75 more miles.

every day driving with lots of city is about 28 mpg.
