Best mileage out of a full tank of gas?

I just bought a 2006 Mazda 3s 5-speed. The manual says it has a 15 gallon tank but MazdaUSA.com says it has a 14.5. The salesperson i bought the car from didn't even know. The most i've gotten on a tank is around 28 mpg.

best i have seen so far is 308 miles before i filled up with 12.4 gal, typical is 275-290

how the **** are you ppl getting 340+ miles out of a tank??!?

oh, and i had a/c on and i have an atx...

i don't care what mazda or the manual says, there's no way the tank holds more than 12.5 gallons

yeah it does, i have put in over 13 gallons... when i got over 420miles...my last tank i got was 370 and that was just commuting miles, no hway all back/main roads, but very lil actual city driving

just over the weekend i got 32 MPG while driving to DC from detroit, and thats all uphill. I had the cruise set at like 70 the whole way to avoid MORE speeding tickets. A little off topic but i gotta letter in the mail last week saying that i had 9pts on my lisence and if i get to 12 they suspend it. (hah)

to threedog, if you are going to shift at 3k why did you buy a manual? my best is about 360 or 30mpg. but honestly i bought a manual so i could drive the car not so i could get better gas mileage. it sees 4k+ almost daily.

If you had a 12.5 gallon tank and had to put 12.4 gallons in it, you'd be calling a tow truck. 0.1 gallons is not enough to cover the pump pickup.

You have a 14.5 gallon tank. Just because the little light comes on doesn't mean your tank is empty.

You just answered your own question.
a/c on=using more gas.
atx=using more gas.

so even when the needle is as far down as it goes, i still have two gallons???

i'll have to get a spare gas jug and fill it, and test that theory out....

best i got was around 385 @ 12.5 gallons hwy/city but i was nursing the sucker the whole time staying at speed limits. now i get like 280 to 300 avg, i get horrible mpg now (confused)

Yep. Unless you got the only Mazda3 on the planet that didn't get a 14.5 gallon tank.

They put that "safety margin" in the guage for those people who are habitually running the tank down to the last fumes.

I think the most I've ever put in mine was almost 14 gallons. I'll look it up when I get home.

I dunno, i was watching myth busters on discovery channel, and they did a test about the AC giving you worse gas milage and they proved that Having the AC on doesnt affect gas milage enought to see any differences. Ill go check their website and see if theres anything there.

A/C using more gas is a fact. It puts a load on the engine.
They were testing the theory that using your a/c uses less gas than opening your windows. Over 50mph, it's true. Under 50mph, it's not. Best fuel economy is with windows up and a/c off.

i dunno, i see that needle get under the lowest mark and i get all (boom07) (nailbyt) (nailbyt)

(confused)

Which is exactly why they do it the way they do. (thumb)

There is a 2.5 gallon reserve. So the light will come on when there is about that much left in the tank.

If the light bothers you, open the fuel tank, open up the gas guage sender arm in the tank and bend it up a little :)

Its just a big conspiracy. lol. But forreal im not gonna argue with that because it does make sence, and ive always thought that using the AC uses gas too. But i know on mythbuster they tested sumthin like that, i dont remember the exact experiment or circumstances that they tested.
I know when i have my AC on my car is slow as hell. It definately pulls alot of power if nuthin else.

I guess it depends on where your driving habit falls in the Zoom-Zoom-Zoominess scale.............. My 2006 3S 2.3 5-door Manual has 3,200 miles on it and I have been consistently getting 30mpg per tank of gas since day one. I drive 50% highway (65mph typically) and 50% backroads (~40mph, most of it in 5th gear). That's my work commute, by the way.

I do not pay much attention to the rmps when upshifting, I have always been used to go by "hear" or by the mood I'm in. I'd say that most of the time I shift around 3k, but I like to let the engine roar. When I'm on those highway ramp I just can't resist................... (laugh)

Just took a trip to Chicago, including a couple traffic jams and about 75 miles of non-highway, and got my best gas mileage ever.
Kept the cruise pegged at 5 over for the whole way there and never exceeded 75mph for the entire time.
Well over 400 miles on the tank and 34+ mpg! (cabpatch)
