this week I was in Vermont and the temperature at night for 3 days straight reached around -80 to -100 below 0. Each morning, I would warm up my car for about 15-20 minutes. However, every morning the car battery was dead. Could this just be directly related to the cold temperatures or is it possible I got a bad battery.

Anyone else have their baby out in these ridiculous temps.

-80 to -100?

I think you mean -8 to -10.

Anyway, the car's battery is a little small, as is the alternator. Cold cranking power is pretty weak.

Mine fired, but barely yesterday at -3*.

i was in VT this past week also... It was -24 friday morning, my car wouldnt even start... I think my fuel lines were frozen... It took an hr, and some dry gas to get it started, plus a constant jump on my battery... It was cold as hell all week there. I was up at Smuglers Notch snowboarding the 4th-9th.

paulmp3 - ridiculously cold wasn't it. how was smugs. at stratton the lift lines were empty and the crowds were minimal if any. the snow quality however was amazing.

rocketspeed - no it wasn't a typo. at stratton thursday and friday morning around 7:00ish it was -80 to -100 with the wind chill. (40-50mph winds)otherwise without windchill it was around -15ish.

I guess one could say I feel a little better knowing others had similiar problems as me in the cold temps.

by the way specV. the topic below was regarding to a car sitting in a garage, as I was referring to one sitting in minus temps.

it was ******* cold, we were the only ones out on the mountain, it was crazy.. After one run you had to go inside or you would freeze to death.... I was curious to windchill temps... friday i looked out the windo at our temp gauge and it said -23, when we got down to the village a local bank said -18.. to cold. I would imagine with windchill friday it had to be at least -50 at the top. I skiied Mad River Glenn once in -45 temps, to cold for me. We just stayed inside on friday and concentrated on getting our cars running so we could make the ride home.

smugs was pretty sweet. The mountain itself is really outdated, they need to update their lifts..

I was up in sugarbush a few weeks ago, i like that much better then smugs. I go to smugs the first week of jan every year, it is always a fun time.

Ha, windchill...you should edit your original post. The windchill doesn't affect the engine BTW.

We've had many below 0*F days here and my car has started no problem every time. It does have to turn over more than usual, but eventually it goes. If your battery is dying after just 1 cold night something is not right.

true girth, i am officially retarded regarding the windchill and cars. so please ignore such relate previous posts. anyways, paulmp3, glad you guys had a good time. If you are interested in another mountain sometime, Stratton in VT has 4 high speed six passenger lifts and a high speed summit gondola. Stratton's terrian would be rather easy compared to that of sugarbush or smugs, but it is about 2 hrs less in travel time. Not to mention, they are constantly running promotions regarding lift and lodging packages. just some info in case you might be curious. as you can tell, stratton is my home mountain.

At those temps just about ANY battery has a hard time, chances are it is fine and so is your chargeing system.
