Bad Smell

Hi guys. My 02 automatic P5 is pretty much a daily driver at the moment. But sometimes if i decide to go a little faster or drive it a little harder, then this terrible smell comes from my car! My car only has 34000 miles on it. what is this smell and how do i get rid of it?

i find that the faster i drive, the bigger my smile gets. you might want to brush your teeth. sorry couldn't resist. i have no idea why your car is smelling.

Does it smell like rotten eggs or sulfuric at all? If so, a cat has gona bad. Bad kitty! Seriously, it is a catalytic converter if it smells like rotten eggs.

Take them off and look at them. If it is the 1st one, you can go get a Ractive or OBX header for $200 bucks or so. Eliminates the cat, gives more power. If it is the 2nd, then you can get a midpipe, which also replaces the cat and gives more power.

yup, what raider said, bad cat. same thing happened with my eclipse. i never figured it out till i replaced the exhaust system and replaced the cat with a straight pipe. also, if you're not a fan of removing cats, mental addiction motorsports sells a midpipe with a high flow cat, and wagner offers both a midpipe and downpipe with high flow cat... although the price on the MAM midpipe is cheaper.

Yeah, before you go saying it's a bad cat..... If i'm not mistaken a NEW cat can produce the same effect, correct?

I just put in a new exhaust system not too long ago and I get the same smell.

does it smell Like mildew/dirty dish towel? if so it is your a/c vent system. easy fix with out having to buy a new cat.

what kind of easy fix? take them apart and do some cleaning? my a/c does give out some unpleasant smell.

get some stuff called ozone , spare it in the outside vent witht he ac running full blast and not on recirc. it will get ur ac system nice and good, and advice, dont go in it after u spray for about 20 min
so just let teh ac run for 20 min. windows up..

shane's got it. You can actually use lysol (or any anti-fungal disinfectant) in to the vent right at the bottom of the windshield and blast the a/c for a twenty min or so.

The Cat will eventually get so overwhelmed that it is unable to deal with the ammount of work that it has to do and it will start to stink.

Swap them both, They used to be real expensive but you can get ones that are like OEM for less..
