Bad heat?

This is my first Mazda so I'm not sure if this is normal or not. I've owned mostly Honda's before and they heat up very quickly and I often turn off the heat because I'm too hot.

I turn my car on in the morning and then run back in the house for about 5 minutes so the car is up to temp when I get in. I start driving and turn on the heat but it really doesn't get warm in the cabin for about 5-10 minutes. I'm just starting to get toasty when I'm reaching my destination. I thought there may be something wrong with the heater but I brought my MSP back to the dealer and they gave me an 02 626 and it is the same with the crappy heat.

Is this a normal trait with Mazdas?

I find that driving the car warms up nicely and the heat is good.

Letting the car just idle does not seem to warm it up very much. This is bad for heat but good for fuel economy.

That's the same for me. I can start my car up and let it idle for like 10 mins and it's barely past the begining of the temp gauge. They don't generate heat very fast when they aren't being revved up. But I get to park in a garage most of the time so I really don't have to worry about that. Sorry about your luck though.

funny, my girlfriend just complained this morning that she notices how crappy my mp3 heats....but it is -44 with the windchill in winnipeg so i'm not that worried about it

The car seems to get up to temp on the gauge fast, but it does lack the heat in the car.

I had a jetta before and altough it took longer for the engine to heat up it pumped out HOT heat to heat the cabin faster.

I am not sure what temperature thermostat they put in the car?. I am in Georgia, so heat isn't that big of an issue with me. Switching to a higher thermostat rating might help you out.

The car definitely gets to temp at a decent rate but even with the car at the proper operating temp the heat is "luke warm" to say the least. My fiance and I were driving a few days ago and she mentioned what's wrong with the heat. It takes a long time for the cabin to get warm.

The 626 rental is the same, it was fully warm when I got in this morning and I started to drive out my development and turned on the heat. It was blowing cold air for about 2 minutes and then SLOWLY started to warm up. By the time I got to the highway, I was starting to get warm but not comfortable. 15 minutes later I reached work and I was starting to get comfortable. I had the heater blowing at full blast (4).

The MSP seems to be the exact same.

My 90 Civic and 94 Prelude blow HOT air almost immediately after turning the car on.

you guys don't know what crappy heat is.....try getting into a OLD vw bug.....not one of the new ones.....if you weren't at highway speed for at least 30 minutes....you better make sure you took a good coat AND GLOVES AND EAR MUFFS with you where you were going too! lol

Actually your heater isn't going to work that well till your cars coolant system gets warmed up....seeing as that is what makes your heat for you......and the best and FASTEST way to get it up to temp...is to drive your car....not let it idle in the driveway.

I understand that Nuke, but I have always done this with all my Hondas, a Dodge and a Buick and as long as the car was warm, the heat would blow hot air.

I guess it is normal for Mazdas since most of you have confirmed this.

Thanks guys!

There's also the bit about using fresh air unless you're on the top vent setting. You could warm up faster with recirculated air. If it's really cold out, warming the air might still be cold.

I've tried experimenting with the fresh and recirculated air and it didn't make much difference.

I'm sure I'll get used to it soon though. I only need heat for a few more months :)

a couple things:
ive been driving my current car wihtout heat for the past week. its not fun, i would love to have any heat. when the windshield freezes from the inside, thats not cool.

second thing:
in my old 92 protege the heat got very hot. if you would leave you hand by the vent, it felt like you could actually get burned.
in my 02 ES, i agree, the heat is there, but its not the same caliber. even with the heat all the way up and the fans on 4 (full) i wish it would circulate faster.

but its not really that big of a deal.

I have a question. I can't seem to recirculate the air in my MP3. I just wont select it. I haven't tried it on the A/C yet but It's not working on the heating aspect. Do you have to set the level to somewhere specific ie. Floor, or vents or def? Every time I push the button to change it just stays on fresh air. Anyone help out?

i am 100% not trying to be a smart ass.
maybe it says somewhere in the manual? i know the problem yo speak of but i havent had a chance to mess with it and my protege is in the shop now along with the manual so i cant check. :(

Noticed the same thing when i got the car but at the time it was the Air conditioning. It's just not cold. I get in my fathers 2000 Accord Coupe V6, and the thing freezes me to death. Get in the MP3, and it's just kinda cool.

Heat isn't such a big difference from my 2000 Civic I Had, or preludes before it. I find the vents that lead into the back seats are kinda neat. Something my Honda's never had. But, the hot heat could be ....hotter for sure, it wouldn't hurt.

bah it's not so bad :p

My car warms up pretty quickly maybe 3-5 min before the entire car is warm, then after about 8 min it gets so warm, you gotta open up the sunroof to balance out the heat. (if you don't keep the heat on, the windows fog up) stupid winnipeg weather.

Granted I've never been in an MP3 or a MSP, but I have been in a protege 5 (getting a ride to my car :p ) But I'd have to say it heats much slower than my sentra does.

It's not bad though, just bundle up in warm clothes and you should be fine.

Speaking of Heating..

I heard that all protege AC's are the greatest either. On really hot days (over 30 degrees celius) even on full blast, the air conditioner won't make you feel cold to actually turn down the A/c...is this true?

man i dont know what yall talking bout.....yeah at first the heater sucks but after about 5 mins of driving the heater at full blast make me break a sweat....i actually turn the ac on for a min or 2......maybe its cause i am fat......i dunno....and the ac at first sucks the same, but after i got the tint on it cools really quick....(scratch)

Holy hell man, dont hit the center of the button, hit the far left hand side and far right hand side and it will switch back and forth for you!
