Backup camera weirdness!

When I first purchased my CX-5 about a week ago the backup camera view did not include the bumper. I do not understand how this happened but it now includes the bumper. I examined the camera and it appears to be solidly mounted, nothing obvious appears to move when I give it a good tug or try to wiggle it. Other than the little dent above my bumper from the first day there is no obvious sign that the car has taken a hit which could have moved the camera. I verified the rear hatch is properly shut. I am super confused about what is going on and kind of concerned something is wrong with the camera. I don't mind seeing the bumper, but if it will keep moving further out of alignment like this it's going to be a problem. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Are you certain you couldn't see it in the beginning? I only ask because I never noticed I could see part of my bumper in the camera view until someone on here pointed it out. I believe there are camera settings you can mess with (such as brightness), but I've never tried changing anything at this point in time.

I was actually surprised I had never noticed it... but it is what it is.

Agree with B-n-B. I didn't notice it either because you don't really focus on that when using it. It's all about the lines and the red one in particular.

I wouldn't be worried.

I am 100% positive I could not see it originally. I very distinctly remember it, I used it several times before the bumper became visible.

All I remember is that I backed up one night and on the screen I saw a blue Smurf. 3 apples tall. Looking up into the camera and scurrying away. Haven't been visible since. Concerned because my home alarm system only detects moving objects more than 30lbs. :(

Well then just keep an eye on it. Literally. If it moves anymore then it's broken. Take it to the dealer and get it fixed. Don't be concerned. Your car is a week old. You have a 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. 👍

I'd say true "weirdness" is more in line with what I'm recently noticing, that when backing up my screen occasionally flips back to the music display for a second before returning to the rear camera view. This has happened 5 or 6 times the past few weeks.

If I remember correctly, you should be able to adjust the camera's settings but I can't remember if this includes the view angle.

Have a look.

This is unacceptable. Take it to the dealer!!!

If it moves more I definitely will. I do like having the bumper visible, but I may ask them to adjust it so less is visible even if it doesn't shift more. Mostly I just find it weird and confusing right now.

I prefer to see my bumper so Iknow exactly how much space remains

Can you take and post a photo of your view from your infotainment system so others can compare and confirm or not your camera view...

Having driven many cars with backup camera I come down on the side that it was always there. I never noticed the rear bumper in the view of my mazda3 until a full year into ownership and then I couldn't believe I didn't see it before. Same with the CX-5 I never noticed the bumper until I put the bumper protector on it then it stood out to me. What your seeing is normal.

Agree. 4 people have admitted they didn't notice it was there at first. One person, for more then a year.
Your camera is fine.
I also don't believe it is adjustable. There's zero reason for it to be.
The redline is 19 inches from your bumper. That's all most people need.

AFAIK the bumper is always visable due to the location of the camera plus it being wide angle

I am just about completely positive about the bumper not being in the image originally. I seriously sat that there for more than a minute the very first time I had it in reverse familiarizing myself with the camera and comparing the view on the screen with the view out the rear windows. I then did this to some extent again almost every single time I backed up afterwards, and I have done it nearly every single time since noticing the difference. I have spent a lot of minutes intently backing up over the past week, I am kind of weird like that (I've spent even more time neurotically testing the radar cruise control). It is a very noticeable difference to me. I of course might be wrong and have false memories, but that seems extremely unlikely from my perspective. Thanks for sharing the info about the redline length being 19 inches, I will be measuring it this weekend. From what I've seen I expect thats around where it is. As far as I can tell the image has not changed significantly since shifting downward, possibly more of the bumper is visible but I'm not certain about it. That's another thing I'm going to measure this weekend.

I found this online showing 2017 CX-5 rear camera view:

You can just see the rear bumper area. Does yours look similar?

You DO know your car comes with a big ass book that tells you all about your car, right? LOL Teasing. But for someone who is "kind of wierd like that" I am surprised you haven't poured over it from cover to cover yet. Its like the first thing I do . I then keep it next to the toilet for a few weeks to reread it at my leisure. I hate to miss out on a feature. I'm kind of wierd like that. That's where I found out the redline is 19 inches. It tells you how far the first Yello is too. This is on level ground. The line can be slightly farther away if you're on an incline, or closer on a decline.
If your camera moved it would be seriously loose and moving a lot. That thing is solidly mounted. At this point I wouldn't worry about it, unless it moves again.
