Backfire.....???

i went to another auto X this weekend and i talked to a guy that had a bad @$$ 3rd gen rx7... he had a dragger exhaust and no cats and a header... it backfired really loud... is it possible to get backfires out of our car like that? if i get a header and no cats at all.. i have one cat gone and it backfires quietly if i do a certain tecknique with my shifting but other than that it dosent backfire much... would it backfire a lot with a header and no cats???

i want bad ass backfires like the RX's ... Ah Hell why dont i just drop a rotary into my car and have the first rotary MP3... lol... i wish i could... i dont even know where to start....

BACKFIRES? are you sure you are not thinking about the flames you see on TURBO cars?

and why in the world would you WANT your car to actually backfire!

if you have ever heard a tuned rx7 with no cat and a header they backfire... i dont want flames... but the loud bang after you let off the gas quickly....

i think you would be hard pressed to get a modern car with electronic fuel injection and controls to back-fire. unless that car has a rotary engine. they have no valves in the combustion chamber and the exhaust just pops out when the port is exposed. i could see a rotary engine back-firing if the turbo was big enough and it had an aftermarket ECU that wasn't really tuned right.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I know how to do it also. Let me know if this helps you out. First, get a hydrolic jack, jack up the front and rear and put them on blocks to be safe. Take off your wheels and set them aside. Go get the greasiest and most ripped up pair of jeans you can find then smear some katsup on your shirt, then go get a mullet haircut. Then with that same hydrolic jack, use it to jack up the rustiest POS redneck truck you can find. Install the wheels on it. Then pop the hood and twist the distributor cap about 1/16th of a turn. Close the hood, fire it up, and viola,....you have a redneck POS that will backfire all the time.

Moral of the story, backfires are for POS redneck trucks.

Please don't take any offense to my story, it is meant to be funny, not to poke fun.

oh come on Ben..you were pokin fun and you know it! lol lol

but I did think it was funny too!

all backfireing is a sure sign of is poor tuning.....sorry...but that is just how it is.

well if backfireing is a sign of poor tuning then all rotary engines with headers and exhaust are poorly tuned... if you put headers and big exhaust on a rotary they will shoot flames out the tailpipe and backfire when driven hard.... i thing the loud gurgle and backfire on a rx7 sounds bad ass... i am NOT a hick.. i take huge offence to that.... im pretty sure that if anyone has no cats on a car then it will backfire since the extra gas isnt being burned off by the cats....

I didn't say that all rotarys were poorly tuned....but in a PISTON drivin engine like OURS is....it sure is....

so...if you want an engine in YOUR car to back fire so you can be cool like a RX-7 that is being pushed hard on the track....crack open your wallet and do a high dollar rear wheel drive conversion to your MP3 and stick a rotory under the hood with headers and an exhaust.

:D

if you want it bad enough...there IS a way.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I've had two cars, both that I have run hard without catalytic converters, and neither "backfired". The first was a 1994 Ford Probe GT where I simply removed the cat and installed a "test pipe" (peice of 2.5 inch pipe with a flange on each end) and all it did was make the car sound like ass. I removed the resonator and the cat at the same time though.

The second vehicle was my 1989 Chevy Truck with a 305ci V8. I ran open headers two days before I brought it to the muffler shop to get dual exhaust installed. It did not backfire, but it sounded like a damn thunderstorm, lots of deep grumbling, but no popping. I had a dual flowmaster 40 series setup with no cats for about a month, still no backfiring, but too loud...In fact the only thing I have ever had backfire is my motorccycle(1993 Honda Nighthawk 750), and thats only when I am slowing down while in a lower gear.

I know what you are saying though, a boosted rotary has an absolutely bad ass sound to it. I don't think we could do that with a Fuel injected 2.0 though, without removing a spark plug wire or something...Anyways, good luck.

I go to a race every year with my father in Elkhart Lake, WI. It is the June Sprints at Road America. They have four days of classic cars, GT1,2,3, F1, and then Corvettes/Vipers racing. I do know what you are talking about mazdamp3_18. When those cars come to a curve and downshift, you hear this loud popping noise. It sounds badass. It is definitely NOT just from rx7s or redneck trucks. I was always curious about this myself.

you may very well be hearing blow off valves going as the manifold presure of turboed cars hit their limits as they let off the accelerator.

As if torn from the pages of this forum...I'm heading home on the Cross Island Parkway in Queens tonight and come up behind a bit ratty red 2nd gen RX7 with coffee can duals that is popping and flaming every shift (up or down). It was cute the first couple of times...but it felt like I was driving behind a really big Zippo lighter (the raw fuel made it SMELL like a Zippo lighter, too.)

yeah i see cars like that all the time around here. I was talking to my brother the other night and he told me he wanted his car to shoot flames hes got a brand new chevy cavaleir he keeps telling me you have to buy a kit to do it or wire a spark plug in the exhuast i had the understanding that with an open exhuast no cats or anything like that it would do it after you let of the gas am i right?

LOL. Didn't you know that's the easy way to get the *I got all the damn paint burned off my front bumper * mod??

Hmm, I like the quote in your signature about the racecar.
Someone told me once that the only compound word that can be spelled using the top row of keys on a keyboard (Q thru P) is the word typewriter ... My vocabulary is so short, I am not sure if they are right are not!

well that be true. :{D just one of those MIND BOGGLIN THINGS.

:{D

Dump enough fuel in there and let off the gas and you will get the "popping" you hear in GT cars and rally cars. It isn't due to poor tuning its due to an excess of gas being dumped into the motor then put through the exhaust and igniting so yes a back fire. I get it due to the extremely high fuel levels i'm running at this time. I sound more like a rally car than a "redneck POS" and if you think my car is a POS for backfiring sometimes then oh well.
