Back Up Cam

Considering a backup cam for my CX9. Seems the cam and rear view mirror is the way to go. Mazda wants 675 just for the parts. searching the web i can find the same mazda parts for 575. Now there is no way i can install something like that so i will need to have it installed. Checked with my dealer and he will do it parts and labor for 778. Lots of money, but that is the cost from Mazda. Seems like they are not killing me on labor, not sure how long it takes them but I know dealer costs on labor are high. Would like some opinions. I can either do it with the dealer or try and find an aftermarket, either wireless or hard wired, and hopefully find an installer. I know it will be cheaper but not sure if that is the way to go. Looking for some advise or opinions. Also has anyone had a backup camera installed after they purchases?? Posted on the main board and didnt get much satisfaction, any advise would be appreciated.

Waynemazda.com probably has lower price than $575 (mazdaparts.org?).
$200 labor cost seems reasonable for the tasks involved in this installation. It could take you several hours to follow the 30 pages of manual. I have installed just the mirror (no camera) myself. It took me around 2 hours. I can imagine the camera portion probably will be another 1 or 2 hours.
It is your call really. To some, $750 for a backup camera spells "expensive". Especially, the screen size is quite small. Have you seen it personally?

If I were you I would just go for ultrasound sensors until it is time to pick your next vehicle. Make sure you have the backup camera in your next vehicle.

Waynemazda doesnt seem to have the part on its web site. Thanks for the help. I know the price isnt bad for install, but the cost of the factory part is pretty steep. I have not seen it, nor have i heard from anyone who has seen it. I did see the backup cam when it is part of the Nav system, that is cool, but i dont need all that and dont want to pay for a nav package. Just going to wait and see if anyone replies that has it or seen it. Im in no hurry. Only drove the car for a week, maybe after a while i wont be so intimidated by the size of it and the inability to see the back of the vehicle. I can see the rear door handles in my side mirrors, but thats it. Again thank you.

You have to call waynemazda to find out their price.
Their website can be quite crappy if you ask me.
There are two parts in the whole backup camera setup: the mirror with display (likely made by Gentex), and the camera. The mirror also includes a kit to find your existing mirror mount. Overall, $500+ seems like a reasonable price. They are about $250 each when you shop them separately w/o the kit.

The 2010 Touring can be had w/o navi and w/ camera. That is a very nice packaging.
The image show on the mirror is only about 3", which is about the size of a typical cell phone display only. Not very big when seen from 2ft away.

Neighbor has a lexus, with the rearview mirror as his backup device. Not to bad, was just wondering how the mazda one works and looks. The natural place for me to look when backing up is the mirror, so to me it makes more sense than the nav. The size of the picture doesnt bother me as long as i can see. I think im more interested in clarity and how it works in rain and bad weather. Living in the northeast, PA, we get all kind of good stuff. I dont think the price is bad considering the prices for the parts. Thanks for your input, hopefully a few more will jump in and offer some advice. Have a good day.

Just an alternative to think about: Pioneer makes a couple of in dash stereo/GPS/backup camera units. I think the lower tech one which is about the same as the Mazda Nav/backup cam/radio can be had for about $1200 installed. If I were considering spending close to a grand on a backup camera I'd sure think about what I could get for a bit more.

The new fancy Pioneer will cost about $1800 for the same thing but that is state of the art. Again, just a thought.

How much does it cost to install the ultrasound sensors? Can the dealer install them?

There is no factory ultrasound sensors for CX9 that I know of.
I have used eBay twice for that purpose and installed them myself.
Usually it involves taking off bumper, some trim pieces in the trunk/cargo area, drill some holes in the bumpers, and put them all together. It usually takes about 2 hours + extra for display.
The part cost is usually about $100. The new ones (though M.I.C) has been very reliable. However, ultrasound can't distinguish within 1ft. It gives a constant beeeeep. That may not be close enough for some areas.

Thanks for the advise but i really dont want to go the nav route, no need for it. Just checked the cost of the option on a new 2010 mazda CX9, back up cam option is 665. Im going to check out a few other backup cams and see if i can resolve this situation. Lot of stuff out there on the net from wireless to wired. Thanks for the help guys.

Check out some of the threads discussing the instal of the Aftermarket head units, and back-up cameras, some are pretty good. Some have some issues with the AC. Dunno if that applies to the 2010's.

How long did it take you to install?

Instaletion was done by the dealer it took them almost 3 hours to install everything

I installed this kit myself. Figure on at least 3 hours, probably more like 4 or 5.

It is a very tedious job. Running the wire from the mirror to the liftgate is a huge pain in the a**. You have to take apart a lot of trim pieces to do it.

The most exciting part of the installation is using a dremel tool or something similar to cut a hole in the trim panel above the license plate -- not for the faint of heart.

Yep, I have been "eyeballin" that area, for a future mod, and yes, it looks like it could be interesting. A hole saw after drilling would also work - assuming it is a round hole?. You just need to get a hole saw attachment for a drill that cuts steel.

Actually, it is a square hole, and the trim piece is plastic. It is not hard to do, it is just a weird feeling to start cutting holes in a brand new car.
